About Mary Ann

I have a Masters from Central Michigan University and a degree in Mathematics from Wayne State University. I've been teaching mathematics for over ten years. I call myself more of a manager than a tutor because I find it important to organize students as well as teach them the rigors of mathematics. Thus the name Mathanager. I will not only teach the concept or skill at hand but I will recognize gaps or weakness in learning areas that effect performance. It is my job to manage that part and provide you the necessary strategies to fill in the missing areas that stunt learning growth. The foundation must be solid in order to proceed to the higher topics. Once we can recognize the weaknesses I can offer a plan to work from at the same time building your new skills. This is called blended learning.

I am able to detect problems or thinking strategies that can throw students off track in math. In addition, I place emphasis on organizational strategies. This will help further down in test taking performance. I cover many strategies required to perform well on math exams. Writing is a key component to math and I spend much time on getting students to write mathematically. It is common to see bad math habits develop in students but with me I will make sure your math performance is right on target.

Most importantly, is the reading component in math. Ninety percent of a student's problem falls short in the actual reading of the problem then detecting what it is asking you to do. We spend a great deal of time rereading a problem and working the text until we can get exactly the jest of the problem.

Lastly, I have experience in dealing with math anxiety. If this is you, I will ease your frustrations and lower your stress by offering you proven strategies that work with students that freeze up in math. There are plenty of techniques that I offer to conquer and ease math anxiety in students.

I am excited to hear from you. Please contact me as soon as possible. Manage your education with me your Mathanager, and be a success at whatever you do!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Study Skills

Since I have two degrees, an undergraduate from Wayne State University and a graduate degree from Central Michigan University all prepared me to take many tests. With these degrees I earned my teaching degree which allowed me to be certified in two subject areas. Every two years I had to maintain my certification as a result my certificate changed from provisional to professional. During this time, I am aware of taking tests and how to study. Through out my teaching career, I had to prepare many students to take test, how to study and techniques in reading a test to better understand the questions asked. With this experience, I am qualified to teach study skills.
