About Lisa

I am in love with Spanish. Not just the language, but the culture and way of life are something that I try to model in my own life. This passion I strive to reflect in my teaching style. I am a licensed teacher in the State of Michigan for both Spanish and History. I have spent a total of two years in several different classrooms, some my own and others as a substitute, which sometimes can be even more challenging. I have not been in one in a while, and look forward to spreading my love for this language among my students now! There is no time like the present to do what you love.

Along with my love of Spanish is my love of history. I studied many areas of history in college, such as European, American and African. History and Spanish go hand in hand, for the Spanish culture, including that in South America, is a rich and detailed one. My goal for my students each session is to take away something new each time. It may not be a new concept, but maybe a new way of looking at the obstacle. Learning a language has many challenges, but I have a few tricks that I can share to ease the burden. I do believe that assessments help improve a student's understanding of their strengths and weaknesses so that we as a team can help you learn.

I am always learning. That is something I have always enjoyed to do. Because of that, I always welcome feedback, both positive and constructive, to help me help my students achieve their goals.

My schedule is very flexible - I am available any time of day, any day of the week to help my students. Whether it be an in-person meeting or just an email conversation, I take time to help those who want to learn! I do have a 6 hour cancellation policy, because I know that life happens and sometimes there are unforeseen circumstances.

I am able to travel to meet my students at any location, from the library to the park. Whatever environment helps you concentrate and absorb knowledge works for me!

I look forward to hearing from you, and hope that I can share my love of learning with you! Your success is important to me, and I will help you reach your academic and personal goals.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

I have always had a special interest in American history. I took two courses in college that covered pre-American Revolution until the Reagan administration. When it comes to history, the easiest way to teach it is to discuss the important facts and quiz them. Knowing the significance of an event and how it impacted modern society also helps put the event into perspective to make it more relevant.

European History

As a history minor in college, I took a variety of courses. However the majority were in European history, ranging from B.C. civilizations up until post WWII. I took a specialized British history course and explored their history even more in depth from 1600-2000. My style of tutoring involves learning about the person or event in question and knowing the important features, which usually involves quizzes and memorization. There are easier ways to memorize that I share with my students!

Geography

Part of being a history student requires you to know where in the world you are at. I took the liberty of studying maps of the world during my classes and even outside of them to be knowledgeable. Geography is a very visual study, so my tutoring practices involve labeling your own maps, researching a certain country or region to learn their country flags and capitals or more memorization through games and flashcards!

Spanish

I have studied Spanish for over 8 years. It was my major in college and I taught Spanish in a classroom for a year. I also had the opportunity to live in Spain and study for three months to be immersed in the culture as well. I find that in order to understand Spanish, you have to blend the culture into the words. I am a firm believer in flashcards and hands on activities that solidify the lesson!

World History

My history minor required that I explore all histories of the world. I covered the U.S., Europe, Africa and Mexico during my undergraduate studies. As an avid reader I continue my education outside of the classroom by reading memoirs and historical works. The best way to learn history is to get the facts and drill them. Mnemonics and flashcards, along with other activities are all great ways to learn!
