Ferris State Univeristy (Elementary Education)
Since graduating in 2012, I have spent time as a long term substitute teacher in a 5th grade classroom, and then as a 4th grade teacher in Arizona. I most recently moved back to Michigan to be closer to my aging dad. However, my passion for teaching remains strong. I want to fill my evenings or weekends by tutoring elementary age students.
I have always loved small group teaching or one on one teaching the most. I like building relationships with my students so they come to trust me, and look forward to seeing me. Learning becomes fun for them and for me. I believe that all students can learn despite any roadblock that they may be facing.
Math is my favorite subject to teach. All of my teaching experience is with Common Core. I encourage students to not only learn from me but to also to be the teacher, and teach me what they had learned. They take ownership of their learning when they know they get to teach me in return.
I specialize in reading comprehension through a reading workshop model. However, my true strategy is to help each student find a way to love learning through reading.
I have experience in lesson planning and teaching Common Core lesson plans in all general subjects.
I have a bachelors in Elementary Education, with a minor in science and language arts. I have a language arts endorsement for 6th - 8th grade.
I am available most evenings, and on the weekend. I look forward to being a part of your child's success in school. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
All of my lesson plans and teaching experience has been with Common Core. I was first introduced to it as a 5th grade teacher, and then as a 4th grade teacher I used Beyond Textbooks curriculum, which only used the Common Core standards.
My bachelor degree is in Elementary Education. I have a minor in integrated science and a minor in language arts. I have many years either as a tutor or classroom teacher. I am most comfortable with 2nd - 5th grade.
