About Debra

Since 1990 I have been designing curriculum and planning instruction for K - 12 students. It has been my responsibility to select, create, and adjust curriculum for both multi-age studies and individual leveled curriculum; schedule, teach and correct assignments; and document high school transcripts for our own 7 children in home education. I continued to study in college classes to achieve a B.S. in 2011 which had a triple focus of Science, Social Science, and Cultural Arts. This provided a well-rounded base for my master in education, (M.ed, Teaching and Learning, Educational Technology and Online Learning,) from Liberty University. My experience teaching students other than my own began in 1996 assistant directing a K - 12 co-op that practiced speeches, scripture memory, and choral music which we participated in until 2007. I then went on to middle school and high school speech and debate instruction until 2013. For the last two years it has been my position to cover all curriculum for 7th grade students last year, (Apologetics, Science, Math, Literature, Composition, Latin, and Geography,) and for 9th grade students this year, (Bible, Latin, Shakespeare, Debate, Physical Science, American Government, American Literature, Composition, and Algebra 1.)

Whatever subject material you need to improve in, it is important to become focused and intentional about learning goals and how to achieve them. Intentional learning has been my personal study and passion for decades and I have recently taken it to a whole new level via the attainment of a M.Ed. Teaching and Learning; Educational Technology and Online Learning degree through Liberty University. I also still adhere to the concepts of the classical method which is great combined with all that is available online. This will help you or your student explore new tools for learning your chosen material. I have been involved in education for more than two decades through teaching my own 7 children at home, by teaching students of all ages, and by continuing to learn personally as well. It is my hope to help students increase in ownership of their own educational goals and to assist them on how to reach them. We will use a variety of learning methods and tools organized in a way the meets your student's needs. Teachers impart the knowledge and direction needed for each next generation to walk in their purposes and plans. Instruction must be relevant to the world this generation of students will live in and it is my commitment to help you prepare.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Reading

I have K-12 25 years experience. And I also have a master's degree in Teaching and Learning.

Bible Studies

I have known the Lord for about 30 years, conducted weekly devotions from a variety of materials and the Bible for more than 20 years with my students, and wrote and taught a women's Bible study. My M.ed includes certification with ACSI from taking graduate level courses in Hebrews and Isaiah.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have homeschooled all 7 of my children beyond this level of learning and, also, went back to college to achieve a M.ed Teaching and Learning. My initial B.S. was a triple focus of Science, Social Science, and Cultural Arts.

English

English K-12 and ACT prep. Personally accomplished in graduate level writing. Essay strategies and grammatical skills will be emphasized. Mental math strategies and online tools to increase comprehension will be used.

Handwriting

I am experienced in teaching handwriting to both left handed and right handed students. I can guide them to write well in both print and cursive handwriting using a variety of resources for copy work. I coach correct stroke order when observing students. I believe this craft should not become lost as we increase in keyboard and digital skills. I have an M.ed, Teaching and Learning, Educational Technology and Online Learning.

Study Skills

It is my passion to guide students into personal ownership of their own learning. I have 25 years experience teaching my own students to plan and navigate each course each semester; and I am in my 4th year as a tutor with other students as well. I can help your student understand the syllabus, divide it well into weeks and days, and plan it into their reality day by day. I am able to help them recognize and prioritize which method or stage of learning best applies to the specific skills required in each class and translate this into an achievable timeline.
