About Margot

First my professional experience: Almost a year ago I graduated with a Masters Degree in Clinical Psychology. It was challenging for me to go back to school this late in my life, but I was determined to do so. For years I have been a social worker, and now I am a psychologist. Hearing my daughter call me her hero meant more to me than having the diploma handed to me. It is never too late in life for one to have a passion for learning.

I am particularly interested in writing/narrative therapy, and would like to specialize in therapy/research pertaining to adoptees. My experience has been working with children and adults in crisis. One of my greatest strengths in this field was being able to emphasize with the individual child or adult, and help them find the tools to help themselves. This is similar to what I hope to do as a tutor: help you find the right tools, and create your own style in order to enjoy learning and succeed in your education.

Other areas of interest: I have excellent writing skills, and have a strong interest in land/equine preservation and conservation, and am involved with this on a community level.

On a more personal note, I am a single parent, my daughter now grown and on her own. My daughter and I enjoyed involvement with Oakland County 4H and equestrian activities through 4H and her school. I can not say enough good things about the 4H organizations offering opportunities for young people to explore new areas of interest, learn new skills, and have fun while doing so. My personal style with learning is to enjoy the challenge and gain at least 3 memorable facts about any subject- even those that might not interest you. Those subjects that do interest you can easily turn into hobbies, careers, or areas of study that are just enjoyable to learn about. I love to read- anything from "Game of Thrones" to "Series of Unfortunate Events" (which I highly recommend to readers of all ages.) I also enjoy writing, as a form of self expression and art- painting pictures with words.

If I can be of any assistance with my skills, life experience and enthusiasm toward learning, please feel free to contact me and I would be happy to answer your questions.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

Professionally I have over 23 years of experience working with children and adults with this diagnosis, through the Macomb-Oakland Regional Center. Personally, my 23 year old daughter was diagnosed with ADD while in grade school. I shared her experience, supporting her while she developed her own learning/coping strategies, helping her graduate from high school as an honors student.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

I worked with chidlren and adults with this diagnosis while employed at the Macomb-Oakland Regional Center. I feel that patience is the key, both for student and teacher, and creative methods for learning allow the student to both enjoy learning and be more proficient in retaining what they have learned. Setting the mood in the learning environment is also important, with minimal distractions/activity. I recently took a short seminar on the effects music has for these individuals, which can be key for maximum calming and de-stressing.

Elementary (K-6th)

My professional experience includes working with children with developmental disabilities and emotional impairments. As a social worker I have case-management and foster care placement experience with ages 5 on up. On a personal level, I was a Oakland County 4H leader. The children participating were interested in equestrian activities, so our readings and instruction were topic specific. Also, my now grown daughter was diagnosed with ADHD at an early age and suffered from insomnia. As a parent I helped her learn coping strategies, and spent many nights reading with her as a means to relax. I love teaching young and older children, and feel that I am able to motivate others and help them learn the tools to help themselves.

ESL/ESOL

I feel that I am qualified to tutor ESL/ESOL, as I love to read and write. Though I have a passion for both, I particularly love writing, putting words together just the right way in order to not only communicate but to convey feeling, past/present, and putting the story into perspective.

Psychology

I feel that I am qualified for tutoring psychology as both my undergraduate and graduate degrees are in psychology. Though my style/preference is humanistic and existential psychology, I have a good understanding and working knowledge of most other theories and areas of psychology.

Reading

As an avid reader myself, I would love to tutor reading and share my enthusiasm for reading with others. I feel that choice of reading material is important for young readers to gain both interest and skill. My daughter and I read together when she was younger, and have many memories of sharing a good story with her.

Special Needs

Individual diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy are often often labeled as cognitively impaired, which can be inaccurate. Compensations and supports for these individuals in terms of teaching techniques and adaptive equipment they use help ensure success with learning. I have experience with individuals with Special Needs through Macomb-Oakland Regional Center. Personally, my niece, age 24, is a Special Needs student. She loves to learn, is quite talented in the kitchen, and is fiercely determined to be successful.
