Attending Oakland University (Chemistry STEP)
I am a chemistry student with a math minor and integrated science concentration, and plan to enter the teaching program at Oakland University. I have always enjoyed tutoring since I was in middle school and in the past school year I have been working at the tutoring center at Oakland University. I have enjoyed tutoring biology, general chemistry and organic chemistry at this job. As a future math teacher, I would love to tutor middle school and high school math, and college level algebra.
I enjoy tutoring because it is so rewarding to see a student gain a better understanding of a concept rather than memorizing how to do a problem. In the future as a teacher, I want my students to understand and enjoy science and math because with a growth mindset, all students can think deeply about science and math.
I studied for the ACT when I was a junior in High School and received the score I needed for my merit based scholarship. I want to help other students succeed as I did.
Currently I have completed mathematics courses through Calculus II. I know that math is about having a deeper understanding rather than memorizing algorithms: I want to help my students gain this understanding of the material they are studying.
I have experience preparing material and leading study groups at the University that I attend in Chemistry and Biology. I have also worked in the university's tutoring center with students in groups and individually with chemistry and biology courses.

We asked Kari to help our son study for a final that covers the full year of his freshman biology class. She was extremely responsive and professional in setting up an initial tutorial, which they conducted at the local library. She not only helped my son get organized to study over the course of several weeks, but introduced him to study methods that she's used in other settings. I feel like my son is solidly on track, and he and Kari have already made a plan for their next session.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
