My day job is at a private school in southeast Michigan. I am a Learning Specialist working with students in Kindergarten through 12th grade. I use direct instruction to teach reading and math to elementary aged students and I support the curriculum for students in middle school and high school. I feel my expertise is in working with the elementary and middle school students. My school is very advanced in technology. All teachers use tablets and are required to take technology classes throughout the school year. I love to work with struggling students in middle school math. I try to balance a tutoring or class session with review skills, new skills, and math games that help students apply learned skills. I am trained in Orton-Gillingham and F.A.S.T. reading and use both methods when working with struggling readers.
I have 30 years of teaching experience. I have worked as a public school self-contained teacher for emotionally impaired students and as a resource room teacher for students with various identified disabilities. I taught third grade for 5 years then became a Learning Specialist at my current school. As a Learning Specialist, I work with students one-on-one or in small groups, mostly in the elementary and middle school divisions. I am old enough to retire but love my job and want to keep helping children learn.
Within the last 10 years, I forced myself to learn math that was previously difficult for me. I understand how hard it is to learn some math concepts. I keep my own compiled math resource book and know that I am capable of figuring out difficult math problems and can model that process for students. I love to play math games and use this as a reward for a student's hard work and persistence.
I am trained in two different phonetic-based reading approaches (Orton-Gillingham and F.A.S.T.) I used these methods and materials daily in my job and get results. Most of my students have dyslexia and/or ADD/ADHD. I am patient and persistent.
When working with students I often do the work right along with them. We can compare answers and discuss how we came to those conclusions. I don't know everything but I sure give it my all to find the best answers. I am persistent and will push students to go farther but not to the point of frustration. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am certified to teach all subjects K-8 in general education and K-12 in special education. I can follow a curriculum for a classroom. I have never taught homeschool before but have managed 34 children in a third-grade classroom. I can also identify special needs and due to my experience in public special education and as a Learning Specialist in private education, I am excellent at individualizing instruction.
I am trained in Orton-Gillingham and F.A.S.T. reading methods. These methods are researched based. I use them daily in my job. I have collected various materials to support these teaching methods.
