About Lucinda

Teaching is my third career, and as far as I am concerned, the only one. I am considered highly qualified by the state of Michigan in all of the Language Arts, as well as in Music. I have taught language arts, history, music, piano, and music history while earning my Master's in Curriculum and Plan Design. I soon became interested in ways to present my curriculum to students that would show positive results. I created and published a method entitled RAPletsĀ®. I have worked with the National Junior Honor Society, Forensics competitions, school concerts, student piano competitions, and am a registered Chair for QAR (Quality Assurance Review, formerly the NCA). I am familiar with many teaching techniques, such as project based learning, Marzano's vocabulary method, Reader's Theatre and have presented district wide seminars on the Collins Writing Program. My focus is always on student success! Teaching is my third career, and as far as I am concerned, the only one. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I am licensed in the state of Michigan as a highly qualified teacher in all of the English Language Arts. I have written and published a book in that area, and my students have been very successful improving their skills.

American History

I have taught history for about ten years. It was my minor in college, and I remain captivated by the subject and what it teaches us. I have created curriculum and numerous unit plans with the purpose of content retention, and have been successful with my teaching methods.

Business

I was an insurance agent with New York Life for several years, and then became an insurance brokers for a total of 15 years. During that time I gave presentations for up to 1,000 people, prepared benefits managing plans to businesses from 1 to 1,000+ employees. I was also licensed to sell securities. In addition to my insurance experience, I also was the director of a non-profit in Detroit, MI from 1994 to 1999. In that capacity, I supervised employees, directed the resource recovery program, and organized the education department. The purpose of the non-profit was to recycle business leftovers into artwork for children and adults. My position there enabled me to meet with many business owners to solicit their usable waste products, to meet with groups of educators and instructing them how to take advantage of our non-profit, and directed all classroom activities on and off site. I also set schedules for employees, as well as pick-up and delivery timetables, and was in charge of planning and up-dating all educational activities.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have taught grades K-college for over 15 years. My license for the state of MI states that I am highly qualified in English Language Arts. I love reading, writing, and spelling. I am especially tuned into finding ways to improve the skills of individual students by adapting my teaching to their needs.

English

I am certified as highly qualified in the English Language Arts area by the state of Michigan. I have published a book on some of my learning techniques and am always looking for new methods to help students.

ESL/ESOL

I am familiar with oral and situational language learning, directed practice, as well as the direct method approach. Interaction is large part of how I convey what needs to be learned.

General Music

I began teaching piano when I was 18 years old, producing many talent competition winners. I played piano and organ, accompanied at churches and schools, and taught choir in elementary and middle school settings. I have choreographed and produced school musicals, concerts, and benefits. My major in undergrad school was music. In all, I spent 25 years in the musical field.

Grammar

I am considered highly qualified in all of the English Language Arts categories. My students' scores in state testing have improved. I have served and chaired many committees concerned with Reading and grammar issues, and am up to date with both the state GLCE's and the common core standards. I have also written a book on methods for content retention and writing skills.

Music History

My minor in undergrad was history. Since my major was music, many of the courses were music histories. I studied ancient through modern music over a period of 5 years. I often used references to historical composers and types of music in my general music classes. I created and implemented a two semester course for middle schoolers entitled Twentieth Century Music History.

Phonics

I have taught for 15 years in Language Arts. This includes, reading, writing, phonics, literature, and poetry for grades K-12. I am considered highly qualified by the state of MI in all aspects of English. I have also written and published a book that deals with the phonics of rhyming and remembering content.

I am considered highly qualified in the state of Michigan in all of the English Language Arts. I will find what techniques will help your individual child, and focus on them for his success.

SAT Reading

Reading has always been love of mine, and it is one of my favorite subjects to teach. Solving the puzzle of the SAT questions is a goal that can be reached, Learning and remembering to use those keys is the important step, one that my students retain and use to be successful.

Social Studies

History was my minor in undergraduate school, and social studies figured greatly into that curriculum. I have taught social studies, created curriculum for those courses, and have always integrated social studies and history into all of my classes. I have given teacher seminars on this topic, and created cross curricular project based learning celebrations for all age levels.

I taught study skills for five years, using traditional methods. I also created and implemented several successful study approaches, and published a book on this subject. My work with the QUALITY ASSURANCE REVIEW, formerly the NCEA, kept me up to date in the newer programs.

World History

World history is a favorite course of mine to teach. History was my minor in in undergraduate school. I have taught many teenagers, and work well with them. I can help your son relate to the content that he must learn. Individual and group work in replicating the themes behind world history is a specialty of mine. My goal is to produce student success.
