About Cheryl

I have been teaching math and technology in private and public schools for over 15 years. My passion for teaching, learning and students have been the springboard for the success of my teaching career. I have worked with various students who come from diverse backgrounds and with varied abilities. Through my experience, I have acquired a variety of teaching strategies in order to reach the multiple learning styles of students.

I enjoy tutoring as it gives me a chance to work with kids one-on-one. Students quite often have a wall built up when it comes to mathematics. This is typically when parents reach out for help. Quite often, the case is really that students can do the math. This is where I enter the scene to try to help students understand the relationships between letters and numbers. It is also my job to help students break down the barriers by developing the logical mindset in order to problem solve. Using teaching strategies, students experience success, yet at the same time, they are challenged. Through their successes, they are strengthening their logical thought processes and problem solving abilities. These successes are the most rewarding part of tutoring. I see the students develop more of an "I can do this attitude" and the walls begin to crumble.

If you feel I could help you or your student, I would embrace the opportunity to help your student with his or her academics. I look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards,

Cheryl

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Accounting

My love for numbers, debits and credits was the start toward my career in Accounting. That is why I chose Walsh College of Accountancy & Business for my undergrad degree. I have worked for a CPA in Grosse Pointe Farms doing the books for his multi properties around Ann Arbor, Novi and Brighton. I have also done budget work for Bendix Corporation and GM's Canadian Division over at the Tech Center. My accoutning experience along with my formal education would be an asset in helping you or your student with their accounting and finance academics. I look forward to working with you in your accademic pursuit. Best wishes in your classes and career.

ADD/ADHD

Working with ADD/ADHD kids has given me the ability to use specific methods and strategies in order to tap into students' learning styles. This is the key to their staying focused and learning. These students are extremely smart and need to be challenged as they get bored easily.

Being a mother to three boys diagnosed with ADD and ADHD, I have experienced firsthand the challenges parents face when working with their kids.

Algebra 1

Quite often students have a wall built up when it comes to Algebra. They possess an “I can’t do math” attitude. Typically, it is at that time parent’s call and my job begins with help students by driving the barriers away. I enjoy helping the students see the relationships between letters and numbers. The tasks of learning to problem solve through compartmentalizing processes and analysis are the crux of tackling such math problems. I like to work with the students on problems that I know they can work through (with my help). As they experience successes, I use scaffolding teaching strategies to give students challenges, yet at the same time…, experience success with previous knowledge and new skills learned.

It is most rewarding when I see the student recognizing his/her successes with their own work. It is my passion to help students achieve success with their academics. This passion has been the springboard to the success of my teaching career.

Business

I have a Bachelor of Business Administration degree with a major in Computer Information Systems (CIS) from Walsh College in Troy. I also obtained an Associate of Applied Science with the same major (CIS). I also have ten years in the corporate world working in a number of industries. They include legal, medical, automotive and insurance. I have worked at mutiple ends of business - ranging from the executive level, the technical end and various roles in between such as end-user and customer service. I enjoy business subjects and have a reputation for being business minded.

I interact well with people of all ages. Being a teacher now, I love to teach and tutor students. Students are drawn to me due to my sincere interest in them as well as my ability to nurture and care for them. It is my passion and love for learning that has made my teaching career a success. I look forward to working with you and/or your student.

Discrete Math

I am a certified math teacher who enjoys working with students and helping them to understand mathematics. Too often teachers can teach students how to work out math problems, however, it is the teacher who has the ability to help students learn the logic behind math problems takes the students to higher levels and experiences success for the student. Quite often if students learn math reasoning and theories, similar strategies can be used across the board (other curricula areas). Students learning to think for themselves is my goal as a teacher.

I have an in-depth knowledge of discrete mathematics mainly through my computer science undergrad degree. Although, the math classes have aided in my understanding as well. Not to mention my teaching math the past few years.

Computer science deals with many aspects of discrete math including number theory using permutations and combinations. Discrete math also includes learning logic as opposed to formulas that are easily forgotten. If a student learns the logic behind math, they are better off in their academics as well as for the work world. Discrete math is used in all sorts of business dealings. When you go to purchase a car and must decide on options, these options are built into a program for the car makers to create. This happens through discrete math concepts.

If you feel you would like my help in assisting you with Discrete Math, I would be more than happy to help you. I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Cheryl

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a certified teacher with endorsements in mathematics and science. I have a portfolio of strategies including using hands-on/manipulative creating fun activities ( when applicable) for reaching the various learning styles of each individual. I have taught diverse groups of students which has facilitated in my ability to build and maintain excellent rapport with varying personalities of students.

It is my passion and love for learning that has made my teaching career a success. I interact very well with my students and their parents/guardians. Students are drawn to me due to my sincere interest in them as well as my ability to interact with them at whatever level they are at. I have learned through my teaching years that maintaining positive rapport with students is as equally important as the delivery of the lesson presented in terms of students' learning and growing as individuals.

Elementary Math

Quite often students have a wall built up when it comes to Algebra. They possess an “I can’t do math” attitude. Typically, it is at that time parent’s call and my job begins with help students by driving the barriers away. I enjoy helping the students see the relationships between letters and numbers. It is most rewarding when I see the student recognizing his/her successes with their own work. It is my passion to help students achieve success with their academics. This passion has been the springboard to the success of my teaching career.

Elementary Science

Science is simply the study of the earth, and living stuctures (human and animals). It also entails chemistry (basic atomic building blocks of nature and how they combine to form the solids, liquids, and gases that make up most forms of matter. Lastly it includes physics, which is the the study of motion. Physics is closely related to chemistry in that..., behavior and interactions of matter and energy are referred to as physical phenomena.

As some would call me a geek, I love to pass on my passion for science on to other students. Experiments are the best way to learn science. I try to use them in all my teaching methodologies.

If you feel I could help your student, I would love the opportunity to help him/her. Feel free to contact me.

GED

Obtaining a GED is the first excellent academic decision a person can make. It opens the doors to a portfolio of opportunities a person would not other wise have. I have taught math & science up through grade 12. I would love to help you or your student with their academics and obtaining a GED.

As a teacher, I am a huge proponent of the need for education, especially this day and age. Employers are picking the "cream of the crop" so to speak. Unfortunately, education is based on scores, rather than students understanding of concepts taught. I use a variety of teaching strategies and methods so that students understand and work through the concepts being presented. The good grades will follow. The sincerity of my philosophy has been the springboard to the success of my teaching career. I only wish the leaders of the various Education Boards in the USA would adhere to this simple principal.

Prealgebra

Quite often students have a wall built up when it comes to Algebra. They possess an “I can’t do math” attitude. Typically, it is at that time parent’s call and my job begins with help students by driving the barriers away. I enjoy helping the students see the relationships between letters and numbers. The tasks of learning to problem solve through compartmentalizing processes and analysis are the crux of tackling such math problems. I like to work with the students on problems that I know they can work through (with my help). Study Skills

The key to success for any academic endeavor is to know how and what to study. Use of time is an crucial component as well.

Most times, preparation is the key ingredient to the success of any pursuit. As an educator, I have obtained many study and learning methodologies which students learn in order to optimize time spent studying.

The more students are able to learn and absorb during the course (spread out over time) of the class, the less time and stress at the end to try to learn.

Creating good study habits is vital as the learning process is maximized. Again, this reduces the need to learn at the end of the course.

Review of concepts already learned is all that is needed for a student to perform well during routine quizzes, exams and finals. Also, students have lower stress levels, thus, they are able to sleep more restfully and eat well. When the student feels good, he/she will be ready for anything.
