I have A Bachelor's Degree from Brown University and Master's Degrees from the University of Michigan and Grand Valley State University. I had an elementary teaching certificate for 20 years, and for the last 10 years I have done volunteer and paid tutoring. I was a classroom special education teacher for 12 years, teaching students ages 7 -20. As a tutor, I have taught students ages 5 - 40. For the beginning reader, I usually use an alphabetic- phonetic approach such as Orton- Gillingham. For middle grades students with adequate decoding skills, I might use a Lindamood-Bell approach to reading comprehension. In all situations I will tailor instruction to the needs and interests of the student.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
