About Peggy

I have A Bachelor's Degree from Brown University and Master's Degrees from the University of Michigan and Grand Valley State University. I had an elementary teaching certificate for 20 years, and for the last 10 years I have done volunteer and paid tutoring. I was a classroom special education teacher for 12 years, teaching students ages 7 -20. As a tutor, I have taught students ages 5 - 40. For the beginning reader, I usually use an alphabetic- phonetic approach such as Orton- Gillingham. For middle grades students with adequate decoding skills, I might use a Lindamood-Bell approach to reading comprehension. In all situations I will tailor instruction to the needs and interests of the student. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Dyslexia

I have a master's degree (M.Ed) in learning disabilities, as well as twelve years teaching experience in K-12 special education. I have ten years experience as an Orton-Gillingham tutor. I was trained in Orton-Gillingham at the SLD Center in Grand Rapids, MI. The SLD Center also trained me in the Lindamood-Bell method "Visualizing and Verbalizing for Language Comprehension and Thinking" , which is a Reading Comprehension Strategy.

Phonics

I have been formally trained in Orton- Gillingham and MTA, which is based on Orton- Gillingham. I have also received advanced training in using Anglo-Saxon, Latin, and Greek affixes and roots for advanced decoding and vocabulary development.. As part of my M.Ed degree in learning disabilities, I completed considerable coursework and hands-on experiences in the alphabetic-phonetic approach to basic and remedial reading. I have a combined total of 22 years of teaching and tutoring experience using a phonetic approach to reading.

Special Needs

I have 12 years of special education teaching experience. I also have an M.Ed in learning disabilities and was certified in emotional impairment and learning disabilities. Further, I have 10 years' tutoring experience in dyslexia and am fully trained in Orton-Gillingham and other alphabetic-phonetic approaches to reading improvement/ remediation.

Study Skills

I have a master's degree in education with a specialization in Learning Disabilities. I have been trained in and have taught many strategies developed by the University of Kansas Center for Research on Learning. These strategies were specifically designed to enhance the academic performance of low-achieving adolescents and students with special needs. Some of them are are also appropriate for grades 6-8, and many can be adapted to the specific needs of the student. I have been trained in the following strategies which relate to study skills: First Letter Mnemonic, Paired Associates, LINCS Vocabulary, and Test-taking.
