BA/ Calvin College, Grand Rapids MI (Linguistics)
Hello! My name is Francesca, and I would love to tutor you. I've been tutoring since I was in high school. One of the most satisfying experiences I had was tutoring my friend in math to help her pass. I've also had the opportunity to tutor students at Woodlawn Ministry Center, and Chapelgate Presbyterian. I've taught English to refugees at Bethany Christian Services, and to university students in China. I started out college as a Math major, but I decided to switch sophomore year to Linguistics. I graduated in 2013 from Calvin College with a BA in Linguistics.
One of my favorite things about tutoring is connecting with each student in the way that they learn. I believe that a student is only as good as their best teacher, so student/teacher connection is important to me. I also enjoy finding out how each student learns. Everyone learns different, so it's important to me to find out how you learn. I find students are much more encouraged when they are taught to in the way they learn best.
My goal in working with students is to empower them to do their best. I want you to feel like you are better at the subject than when we first began. My hope is that you'll also feel more confident. My promise to you is that I'll be patient with you along the way. Learning is not always easy, but I believe we can overcome any obstacles we encounter.
My dad is a mathematician, so he gave me a love for math. He gave me a good foundation to build upon to make learning math fun for me. I started out as a math major in college before switching to linguistics, so I took upper level math classes beyond calc 3. Though I found linguistics was a better fit for me, I still enjoy math and love showing people that it can be fun. It's like a different language, so the important thing is finding out how you learn. I believe everyone can at least learn the basics.
I have a BA in Linguistics. One of our classes was English Grammar so I have a deep understanding of how grammar works. My linguistics degree improved my writing skills and become an avid editor. I have also taught ESL in various settings. Translating my math skills into my writing has been a joy. It's fun for me to see how patterns influence our ability to communicate clearly!
If I sound like someone you'd like to work with, please message me. I'd love to find a time to meet to see if we are a good fit, and then start our tutoring journey. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
