About Kate

I have always found education to be the most rewarding part of working in the sciences. I have my M.S. in Biology, and my primary areas of expertise are ecology, aquatic sciences, marine biology, zoology, and statistics, but I also enjoy teaching general biology, microbiology, and helping with writing assignments. I am passionate about science, and I am a strong communicator.

I have about four years experience as a Teaching Assistant to undergraduate students in high-level biology courses, and I am a very hands-on educator. I believe in emphasizing problem-solving and analytical thinking approaches, because I think that is the best way to truly learn a subject.

I have recently completed a Master's degree, during which I was a TA for senior-level Biology courses. I thoroughly enjoy challenging students to think in different ways. I understand that biology is not all about memorization or flash cards; it is about understanding the ways that multiple components of complex systems come together and form processes. I am a published scientist, and I have lots of experience with scientific writing and data analysis, and would be more than happy to work with students in these areas.

Please contact me if you have any questions or would like to schedule a session!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Biology

I have experience with the following course material: Ecology; Animal taxonomy and zoology; General biology; Chemistry; Math and statistics; and Test prep.

Biostatistics

Throughout my graduate career, I completed several scientific projects, including chapters of my own thesis and collaborations on others' publications. These endeavors required lots of biological data analysis. Furthermore, I have taken several courses (Quantitative Ecology, Data Model Analytics, Statistics in Research) focused on biostatistical analyses. I have taught biostatistics while working as a TA at Virginia Tech.

Ecology

I am a published scientist/ecologist with several water quality, ecology, and hydrogeology papers published or in the process of publication. I have lots of experience with biological data analysis, scientific writing, and education.

Microbiology

I have my MS in Biology, and my master's research focused on the ecology of microbial populations.

Prealgebra

Biology, general science, and math. I have always found education to be the most rewarding part of working in the sciences.

SAT Math

I have experience with SAT/ACT math; Algebra; pre-calculus; general math; writing skills; and
science education.

I am passionate about science, and I am a strong communicator. I have about four years experience as a Teaching Assistant to undergraduate students in high-level biology courses, and I am a very hands-on educator.

Statistics

I have experience with Statistics (AP, College level, biostatistics); Algebra; Sciences; especially Biology/Ecology; and Test Prep.

I have my M.S. in Biology, and my primary areas of expertise are ecology, aquatic sciences, marine biology, zoology, and statistics, but I also enjoy teaching general biology, microbiology, and helping with writing assignments.

Zoology

I have my master's in biology, and my graduate and undergraduate coursework has included a lot of experience in zoology. I am particularly experienced in invertebrate zoology and insect behaviors, and I have always been very interested in marine invertebrates. My previous teaching jobs - college TA and Environmental Education Instructor at a science camp - have given me lots of practice teaching zoology, animal ecology, and basic animal biology to many ages.
