About Andrew

Greetings. I am an English teacher of grades 7-12. I last taught in North Carolina in a small school where I had to prepare for a lot of different classes each day (six), but many of the classes were quite small (the smallest was six students). From this I learned to work hard in preparing for my classes and to pay careful attention to each individual in my class. I found that my favorite classes were those where I got to spend the most time one-on-one with students. My students and I had a lot of fun while we learned, and we learned a lot. I believe that education (whether in school or by yourself on the couch with a book) is one of the most exciting, enjoyable, and empowering activities a person can do. Learning is one of my favorite things in the world, and I love helping other people learn and grow to love it, too.

After teaching in a formal school setting for several years, I understand that sometimes what someone needs most is a bit more attention. Unfortunately, you can't always get that from a teacher with 30 other students. What I love so much about tutoring is that students have the time and space to ask the questions they might not get to in class and I have the time and space to encourage and support them in the ways they need. Students can work at a pace that works for them without the pressures of the classroom. They can get to know their teacher and, more importantly, their teacher can get to know them. Tutoring can take away the frustration, but keep the challenge. It can remove the crowd, but keep the personal attention. It can take away the social anxiety and unleash the curiosity and drive within the student.

With three years teaching in an English classroom, four years of college training, and years of avid reading, I have learned to teach English well. What's more, after all that time, I haven't lost my love for it. I love to read all sorts of literature and am good at connecting people to books they'll love (or don't yet know they'll love). I have college-level training in writing academically and creatively. I've studied and learned the rules of grammar and (even if it's not the most exciting part for most people) I've become pretty good at it. I love words and sentences and am excited to help you master them at whatever level you need to.

After moving to Grand Rapids for my wife's career, I decided to take a break from the classroom and focus on what I love most about teaching. Working with people to help them learn. I believe that learning IS exciting and fun, people just need the right opportunity. Whether you need to polish of that essay or need some help with your reading assignments. If you can't keep a participle separate from a preposition. If you need to understand what's up with The Great Gatsby. If you didn't realize the last three sentences were fragments, I can help you. I'm excited to get to know you and look forward to our tutoring relationship. Contact me today and schedule our first lesson.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Public Speaking

As a former English teacher, I have three years professional experience teaching public speaking to middle and high school students. I believe guided practice and supportive, constructive criticism lead to improved confidence in self and clarity in communication. A public speaking student of mine should expect to get lots of practice in a safe and supportive environment, with plenty of helpful feedback.
