Grand Valley State University (Piano Performance)
Greetings, I am Reese, a current student in the college of music and dance at Grand Valley State University. I will be entering my junior year in the fall, pursuing a piano performance degree. I have taken a full year of piano pedagogy from Dr. Helen Marlais, senior editor for her own piano method series, Succeeding at the Piano, and have had prior teaching experience from elementary school students to high school seniors.
My ability to teach is not limited to piano pedagogy, as I have a very well-rounded knowledge of both music theory and aural perception, or ear training. I am classically trained, and would be able to prescribe practice strategies to ensure success with the technical side of music, as well as to teach musicality, nuance, and phrase shaping. I am also well-versed in contemporary popular music, 21st century classical compositions, contemporary or hymnal church music, and jazz improvisation. Though Classical techniques are a staple to musical success, your interests as a student will be of a high importance in tailoring your musical education to be interest-driven.
I have received exemplary grades and have accumulated a vast array of knowledge in music theory, aural perception, and piano pedagogy in my two years at GVSU. I have had piano performance experience with everything from solo competition performances and professional ensemble tours across the U.S. to accompanying over 12 distinct instruments and performing jazz standards with a jazz combo. I would love to share with you some insider tips on how to work with an ensemble, how to improvise, and how to excel at music theory!
I have been blessed to receive pedagogical training from one of the most prestigious and nationally renowned piano teachers, Dr. Helen Marlais. Her teaching style is incredibly effective in technique, musicality, and allowing the student to discover and learn through demonstration and communication. I would be honored to use her method and my passion about music to further your musical growth and interests! For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
