About Ryan

I am in my Junior year of Ferris State's Secondary Education program, majoring in English and minoring in both Biology and Psychology. I hope to teach either Biology or English for Grand Rapids Public Schools, where my elementary-aged children attend.

I have experience with one-on-one, in-home tutoring for both public school and home school students ranging from elementary to high school levels. I also spent two years tutoring writing at Grand Rapids Community College's drop-in writing lab, where I earned level one certification from the College Reading and Learning Association.

I have tutored students in math in in-home tutoring sessions, including a home schooled 14 year old who was returning to public school and needed to learn everything from elementary addition to high school algebra.

I started my education program as a Biology major and changed only because of my love of literature. I plan to teach biology and physiology on the high school level once certified.

I have been writing for 35 years and teaching writing for 25 years. I have tutored in the college setting and in the living rooms of junior high students. I have had short stories published and continue to write for fun and profit.

I love to learn, especially about teaching, and tutoring offers me the opportunity to explore more of what teaching can mean to me and to others. I would love the opportunity to learn from your students while sharing my skills with them.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I teach Sunday School, and have for two years. I am the son of a seminarian and the brother of a preacher. I have commentaries on my bookshelf and read and discuss The Bible for the fun.

Drawing

I have been drawing for almost 40 years. I have taken summer classes in Cartooning and beginning level Drawing classes in college. I am a both a student of Art History and a lover of comics and animation. I am comfortable sharing with students the fundamentals with which I am familiar.

Study Skills

I have counseled students in-home and in drop-in labs on study skills. I have worked with elementary, high school, and college students on their study skills. I have engaged in trial and error to find the best methods for myself in my own study, and, as a result, I know several methods which may be useful by others, should those not work.
