About David

Hello,
Although I am not formally certified, I have taught in public schools in Western Michigan, including 5th and 6th-grade elementary, 7th-grade math, 8th-grade health, and 8th-grade computer science. My preference is to work with children in late elementary although I would feel comfortable tutoring kids from K-12, depending on the subject matter. I have taught all subjects in late elementary plus am strong in elementary math through algebra, science, history, social studies, psychology and reading.
I can establish rapport with students of all ages. I have some testimonials from previous students I can show you. I would generally be available in the afternoon and evening, along with weekends, as circumstances may require. I recently tutored a young woman taking a psychology class at Grand Rapids Community College and in a matter of weeks her grade went from D to B.
I have completed all the requirements for a teaching certificate in Special Education and Elementary at Grand Valley State University, lacking only Teacher Assisting and Student Teaching.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

I have completed all of the course work for teacher certification in Special Education, including extensive coursework in psychology. I have taught ADHD students in my classes, and I have ADD myself so I understand the difficulties involved.

Elementary (K-6th)

I taught a 5th grade class full time for the better part of a year after the starting teacher left because he said the students were too rambunctious. I taught a 6th grade class for one semester. I have taken classes at GVSU in the teaching of reading and mathematics to elementary students.
