About Sharon

Hello Parents and Guardians,
My name is Sharon. I have 34 years experience in public education, grades K-12 and have loved every day. I have a BA in teaching the Emotional Impaired and a Masters Degree in Learning Disabilities. I am qualified to teach all ages both in General Education and Special Education.

My job description in the schools is "Resource Room Teacher", which is very fitting because I have So many resources available to help children learn! I'm very aware of different learning styles and individualize each student's educational plan. I also have experience team-teaching with general education teachers in the classroom, often helping those students who are having difficulties keeping up with the fast-paced Michigan Common Core Curriculum.

Teaching children that need extra help in one way or another has been all I've ever wanted to do since I can remember, so I've had a lot of practice and am very good at what I do!

My biggest strength, aside from academic success, is my ability to establish great rapport with my students as well as with their parents. I am a competent, confident, and compassionate teacher.

My hours are flexible. I can usually work around your busy family schedules. Contact me!

Thank you for considering me!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

I have worked with ADD/ADHD students for thirty years, and have a son of my own with ADD. I have many ways to help organizational skills in and out of the classroom.

Dyslexia

I have my Masters Degree in Learning Disabilities. Dyslexia is a common term that is meant to describe specific difficulties learning to read. This is my specialty. I have been trained in many, many programs and methods to help children how to read.

Elementary (K-6th)

The vast majority (about 90%) of my teaching career has been with students in grades K-6. This was by choice; I love working with kids and teaching them the basics that will lead to a successful educational career. I am certified to teach all subjects at this level.

Elementary Math

I've taught elementary math for over 20 years. As a resource room teacher, I taught all subjects.

English

I have taught all grade levels in the public schools for 34 years as a special education Resource Room teacher. My program is designed to replace, supplement or enhance the general education curriculum. All language arts skills, including English, Grammar, Spelling, Vocabulary, Writing, and especially Reading.

Phonics

I have taught phonics using the Orton Gillingham method, Project Read, Glass Analysis, S.P.I.R.E, and others. I am thoroughly well versed in phonics and its importance in learning to read.

Special Needs

I have my BA and Masters in Special Education. I have worked with special needs students for 33 years.

Study Skills

Study skills are extremely important for all kids. Those students who don't have great organizational skills need to learn them with direct instruction. Many times students with ADD/ADHD need extra help to set up study skill systems that will work for them. I'm pretty good at that!
