About Zachariah

"The key to education is to get to them before they realize that they're learning" - Unknown.

Rather than teach a specific set of material, I prefer to give my students a set of mental tools that enable them to tackle the target material and use the subsequently developed analysis skills to find better ways to learn. I will require you to comprehend concepts and will not teach rote memorization methods unless special needs call for it.

I have taught middle and high school classes on math and science. I have tutored many college level classes including, but not limited to calculus, programming, physics, chemistry, critical thinking, writing, finance and nutrition. I have also officially taught two GCSE A/AS level courses on critical thinking and problem solving, and argumentative essay writing. I also have experience with tutoring post doctoral students with specialized concepts.

Along with academia, I like to help people learn new skills in other fields, like learning to play the piano, or how to manage your own finances. I have experience in drawing up fitness programs and can coach for pitching (baseball), ping-pong, chess, and rowing. I also have experience in teaching and mentoring learning-disabled kids and adults. They require alternative ways of learning things, and I like to adapt my teaching methods for my target audience.

** I am actively tutoring now **. Please send me a message for further inquiries :)

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Biology

Studied genetics and pharmacology for 4 years. Worked in a wetlab for 6mo. working with E. Coli and yeast for biosyntheses and wetware applications, designed nucleic acid based circuitry.

Biostatistics

4.0 at MSU in Statistics I&II For Engineers, BioInformatics, and a 3.5 in a Capstone Project using R and SciPy/NumPy to process and present, interpret and discuss wetlab data.

Bridge

I have played bridge competitively for over 3 years and have extensive knowledge of the game. My team won second place at the ISEO playing by a subtype of duplicate bridge rules. I was also the head of the bridge club and responsible for training teams after I left for another year.

C

I have programmed in this language for 6 years, tutored students in the MSU "C" course for the past two years, and used this language while partaking in the GCJ. I also have contributed code in open source projects that use C.

C++

I have programmed in this language for 4 years, passed the C++ course at MSU and tutored students in the course for the past two years. I used this language while partaking in the GCJ.

Chemistry

I studied Chemistry at SISA and MSU. I have years of laboratory experience and have experience tutoring at many grade levels from high school to specialized post grad studies. For the latter my experience has been mostly with Organic Syntheses, Quantum Chemistry, and Pharmacokinetics.

Chess

I was General Secretary/President of my High School Chess Club. I finished 4th at the ISEO chess tournament. I'm well versed in popular openings and variations along with a few obscure ones. I also have a good grasp of opening and closing theory.

Computer Programming

I have been programming for years, starting up with my first job as a network and sysadmin for nAxis in 2005. I have contributed to a lot of open source projects on GitHub and SourceForge.

I have low-level programming experience whilst designing a new processor architecture and microcontrollers for specific hardware designations.
My work has earned me years of experience with multiple programming languages and paradigms, including C, C++, Python, Haskell, FORTRAN, PASCAL, etc. and experience working with numerous large-scale projects with teams.

I've hit the top 1500 in the GCJ 2010 and have been successfully tutoring undergrad students at MSU for the past three years including a couple for Capstone projects.

I've taken CSE 231 and 232 at MSU regarding this topic.

I've tutored CSE 240 (Algorithm basics), Advanced algorithmic structure, digital logic, and as mentioned before, Capstone projects.

I've tutored CSE 240 (Algorithm basics), Advanced algorithmic structure, digital logic, and as mentioned before, Capstone projects. A large majority of clients over the past couple of years involved extensive knowledge of computational systems from a network, hardware, architecture and software perspective. Recently I worked to convert a low-runtime level networking protocol I designed from a high level runtime to a system runtime 2 process reprogrammed in assembly.

Differential Equations

I've completed the corresponding course(s) at MSU (Calc1, 2, 3 and 4) Calc4 or MTH235 covers differential equations. I aced the course and have tutored students in the course for a little over a year..

Fitness

I've trained for 3 years in martial arts, 4 years in parkour, and have been on my college rowing team and the local city club team since 2009. I've been an assistant fitness manager at my gym, a volunteer coach for rowing, and I coached martial arts as part of my black belt certifications.

Martial Arts

I have a black belt (certified by PSKA) in Shotokan, and 3 years of experience in competition for full-contact and light-contact tournaments in Shotokan, Judo, and mixtures.

Organic Chemistry

I have successfully tutored Organic Chemistry 1 & 2 for MSU undergrads. Also tutored Organic syntheses 1 & 2 for grad students. I have 4 years of lab experience and ran a wetware lab for some time and a full chem and biochem lab for a year.

Physics

- Completed multiple Physics requirements for the MSU College of Engineering.
- Tutored many concepts in physics, from classical mechanics and electromagnetism to the standard model and quantum field theory & chromodynamics.
- A current project includes explaining concepts with just a slinky. Even hard-to-grasp concepts are actually relatively simple; you just need the right perspective; Like trying to see a spiral staircase intersect.

Python

I aced CSE231 (Python) at MSU. I've tutored Python for this class numerous times, and I used it for 75% of my code during the GCJ.

UNIX

I have been using UNIX and UNIX-based systems for a little over six years. I am very familiar with the OS structure, the differences between UNIX and Linux, and generally configure my kernels manually. When I worked as a network administrator for a year at nAxis, I set up forty UNIX servers from scratch (similar to LinuxFromScratch, but without the helpful documentation).

Excellent tutor — He is teaching our son AP biology and we were very impressed with his promptness to respond to the first message. Everything after that was immaculate. He showed up on time, inquired about the lessons in advance and was very well prepared. He was able to connect with our son and we are really grateful for all the help. ...
