I have a K-8 language arts teacher's certificate with a minor in education. I have substitute taught for more than three full years, have tutored at a Sylvan Learning Center, volunteered bi-weekly in my daughter's school as a Watchdog Dad and currently work at Burton Elementary during summer school. Before teaching, I was a broadcast journalist and a Navy Journalist. I have written for several publications in Grand Rapids as a freelance writer. I enjoy working with children and helping them sharpen their skills in all subjects, but especially enjoy teaching reading an writing since they are the core subjects of my major.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a teaching certificate from Grand Valley State University grades K-8 and have spent the last five years substitute teaching mainly in 2nd - 7th grades. Children between seven and 12 work well with me as I am a patient, kind and caring teacher who has experience reaching young minds and helping them master grade-level content.
After growing up playing golf and occasionally living on a golf course where my brother and I snuck in a few holes whenever we could, I tried out for my first college's golf team and made it! Although I was #5 on the roster, I learned more in my first two years at college than I have at any other time. I have taken that experience and refined my game now consistently breaking 80 and teaching my freshman boy who hopes to make the JV team at East Kentwood. Golf is one of my passions and I know how to not only improve a novice's game, but to make learning fun!
My writing experience includes five years of instruction as a certified Language Arts Teacher grades K - 8, 21 years as a Navy journalist, five years as a Television News Reporter, a year as a tutor with Sylvan Learning Centers and one summer as the 8th Grade Language Arts Teacher at Gerald R. Ford Middle School.
