About Thomas

My goal is to provide learners of all ages a way to get an edge on their supplemental learning needs. Tutoring provides a professional growth opportunity to utilize both educational background and business system administration skills acquired through work experience.

My Mathematics degree from Hope College (Holland,Mi)has served me well over all of my work related experiences. I have been fortunate to have been able to use mathematics extensively at American Seating Company, Amway Corporation, Perrigo Company, and Smiths Aerospace/GE Aviation. Supervision of analysts have frequently required one-on-one training in order to bring someone 'up to speed'. Computer skills include Word, Excel, SQL, PowerPoint, MS Project, and several diagramming applications.

As mentioned previously, my goal is to provide learners of all ages a way to get an edge on their supplemental learning needs. Our 12th grade son (18 yrs.) continues to make both my wife and myself aware of the importance of spending time within a teaching mode on a very regular basis. It is quite apparent that his school work (especially math) is highly oriented toward testing requirements now and in the future. I recognized the need early to keep current with College Admissions Testing criteria by taking on-line and publication practice exams over the last several years. Being a math major this provided a 'refresher' for me and a way to keep our son ahead of the game.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Study Skills

My educational background includes a B.A Degree in Mathematics from Hope College. I am certified through SLDRead Tutoring - Specialized Language Development and currently tutor students in 1st grade and 3rd grade in Language Arts and Mathematics as necessary. Lesson Plans, Monthly Progress Reports, and End-of-Term Progress Reports are submitted as necessary to establish goals and measure progress against those goals. My philosophy regarding actual study skills is that basic principles of a subject (especially math and science) have to be ready for use to support problem solving. Organizational skills, being proactive, and staying focused are all necessary to support good study skills.
