About Heather

Hello everybody,

I have taught Elementary, middle school, high school and adult English language learners.

I am also a certified elementary teacher.

I am honored you are looking at this profile! I can't wait to teach you the way you learn best.

I have a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education, Music and ESL and I am certified in Elementary Education and ESL. I had 3 student teaching experiences in a 2nd grade bilingual classroom, and an elementary music classroom as well as an ESL elementary classroom.

As a 1st grade teacher, I strived to make learning fun. During our literacy block, my students rotated between different centers where they listened to reading, worked with words, worked on writing, read to self and read to someone, as well as worked with the teacher. I purchased a secret stories phonics curriculum where my students heard these phonics stories they couldn't tell anyone else :) They have a visual aid and a gesture to help them remember the sounds letters make. Then after I told them the story, they could tell each other. If your child needs help in reading, I can guarantee you these secret stories would help them become strong readers.

During our math time, we had a lot of hands-on centers, where students worked together in learning and rotated. For example, when we learning 3-D objects. My students explored hands-on real life foldable shapes, made their own 3-D shapes, used geoboards and tangrams. They had a lot of fun. I don't think anybody learns language best by looking at a book and listening to the teacher so I strive to make learning something that you do.

Feel free to contact me, I would love to answer any questions you have and talk with you to see if I am a good fit for you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Reading

English and reading have always been my strongest subjects. I had to take several Reading classes at Cornerstone University. Although, I have my teacher certification in Elementary, my training has helped me know how to develop confident readers.

I know many ways help students better what they are reading by asking themselves questions during reading and re-reading to answer their questions.

I also know how to use higher order thinking skills to understand what you read at a deeper and more extensive level.
