About Colleen

I have been a teacher for 40 years in a variety of subjects. I received my Ed.S. and Ph.D. from Michigan State University. Most recently I have been tutoring students in the Genesee County (Michigan) area. In addition to these credentials, I have also received Reading Recovery training. Reading Recovery has changed reading instruction for the better all around the English speaking world.

Children begin to feel badly about their school performance when they have difficulty learning to read, write or do math. I understand this and know how to reach your child at a critical time. I believe the teacher's job is to "arrange victories" for the student. This requires careful planning and the results, more confidence and improved grades, lead to overall better scholastic performance. I believe in varying the techniques in each lesson to keep the student interested and engaged.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have experience tutoring high school students in preparation for the English and Reading portions of the ACT test. While I am certified to teach English grades K-8, I personally have taken college entrance examinations successfully for BA level as well as PhD level, so I have good mastery of the test content.

ASVAB

I have experience helping high school and adult students improve their basic math skills, and to that extent, I can help people improve their math performance.

Drawing

I have studied drawing at the University of Michigan College of Architecture and Design, and I am currently a practicing artist.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a certified teacher in the State of Michigan for all subjects Kindergarten through 8th grade. I also have the reading instruction endorsement for Kindergarten through 12th grade.

I have the following college degrees: BA Elementary Teaching, Univ. of Mich. Flint; MA Reading Instruction, Mich. State Univ.; EdS Reading Instruction, Mich. State Univ.; Reading Recovery Certified, Oakland Univ. and PhD Educational Administration, Mich. State Univ.

I have been an educator for over thirty years, predominately in elementary education. I have had some experience working at the pre-school,
high school, college, and adult learner levels as well.

I have been told I have a gift in teaching children. I show children that learning can be easy and fun. I identify what the child does well, and bolster their confidence with that knowledge. I identify what the child is having trouble with, and target a few learning goals at a time to insure success.

Elementary Math

I have taught classroom elementary level math to K through 6th grade students for over 20 years. I have also taught remedial math for over 15 years to students (K-6th) who had difficulty in math. In addition, I have taught a graduate level math methods class to other teachers of grades K through 8 at Central Michigan University. I have been doing private tutoring for 4 years. When I tutor I like to use a variety of techniques in order to keep the lessons interesting. I also assess each child so I can target the areas where help is most needed. Sometimes parents like "homework" help for their child and I am willing to help with that if the child brings his textbook and assignment.

English

I have taught English for more than 15 years to grades K through 6th and I am certified by the State of Michigan to teach English through the 8th grade. I have experience tutoring high school students in English for the ACT test as well.

ESL/ESOL

I have taught English as a second language to elementary students in the past. I am familiar with available materials and many techniques. I would really enjoy helping someone master English. English is not an easy language and there are many idioms that can challenge the learner. My goal would be to have a structured plan for learning filled with fun activities.

Painting

I am currently a practicing artist. I work in watercolors, acrylics, ink and pencil. I have shown my work at the Swartz Creek Art Gallery, the Flint Institute of Art's Sales and Rental Gallery, Art in the Park show, Greater Flint Arts Council's Membership Show, and in local businesses and senior centers. I have taken many art classes at University of Michigan Ann Arbor, Flint Institute of Art, and independent artists' workshops. In the past, I have worked as a commercial artist at Arganaut Design.

Phonics

I have been a reading teacher most of my life so phonics has been an integral part of my daily life! I have used many varied phonics programs and materials over the years, and know which approaches work best. I find games and fun activities help a great deal, but even more important is teaching phonics from the text the child is currently engaged in. I know how to help students with the confusion that results from phonics rules that work in some situations, but not all. My Master's and Specialist degrees from Michigan State University were in Reading Instruction.

Prealgebra

I have coached other teachers in the methods of teaching mathematics K-8. I also taught a graduate level class in math methods for Central Michigan University.

Reading

I am a certified teacher in the State of Michigan for all subjects Kindergarten through 8th grade. I also have the reading instruction endorsement for Kindergarten through 12th grade.

I have the following college degrees: BA Elementary Teaching, Univ. of Mich. Flint; MA Reading Instruction, Mich. State Univ.; EdS Reading Instruction, Mich. State Univ.; Reading Recovery Certified, Oakland Univ. and PhD Educational Administration, Mich. State Univ.

I identify what the child is having trouble with, and target a few learning goals at a time to ensure success.

Spelling

I have had one student for tutoring in spelling. She was a third grade girl. Her grades were failing, but with tutoring she received A's in spelling. We did spend the entire hour on spelling at first. Once she understood how to study for spelling, we were able to spend part of her hour on reading from then on.

Study Skills

The key point when discussing study skills is that each subject has study techniques that are unique to it. Studying for spelling is completely different than studying for math or science. I have taught all subjects at the elementary level and have helped all kinds of students with their study skills. I recently tutored a third grade girl who was getting D's and E's in spelling and she improved so much she went to getting all A's. I believe I can help anyone to become a better learner!

Having taught school for over 30 years, I have prepared my students for and administered all types of tests in all subjects. I have successfully taken many tests myself, including the GRE. I find that when taking a test, one must make a plan at the beginning to allot for appropriate time for each segment of the test if it is timed. On tests calling for essay type answers, it is also important to plan, using a short outline of things that must be addressed in the answer. I can also help with strategies for multiple choice, open-ended and fill-in-the-blank types of test items.

Writing

I have taught writing to elementary aged children for over thirty years.
I have used many different systems, and have developed my own unique approach over time. I follow the Michigan Department of Education's guidelines/benchmarks and use their rubrics for evaluating the writing as the student is progressing. I work with my writing students in the various styles of writing covered at their particular grade level.

Fantastic Tutor — I was looking for a reading tutor for my son, who is a first grader struggling with reading and Colleen is such a blessing. I can't believe we are able to work with a retired reading specialist. She is patient and really keys in to his needs. She listens to his interests and customizes his lessons for him. She created the sight word bingo for him which he loves. We love her. ...
