Hello. My name is Jackie and I worked as a high school English teacher in Lapeer and Genesee counties for 25 years. I also worked as a tutor for math and reading and as a homebound teacher for all subjects. I taught in adult and alternative high school settings so I have patience with students who struggle and I have developed a repertoire of techniques for engaging students in academic subject areas and assignments. I also have a heart for such students because I passionately believe that ALL students can be successful and that I need to keep trying new ways to encourage and support that end goal. I do not give up on my students.
I am now attending Michigan State University and in the final year of a PhD program in curriculum, instruction, and teacher education. I teach courses at the college level for young people who want to be teachers. I work with many international students so I have developed new skills in the area of ESL instruction. My specialization is in literacy so I have an in depth understanding of reading and literacy instruction across content areas.
I am an outstanding tutor of English because I have an user graduate degree in English, I taught high school English for 25 years, and I am an avid reader and writer myself. I have worked with hundreds of students who struggle with English and I have successfully cultivated in those students a genuine love of reading and ability to write effectively. I enjoy sharing my love of my subject area with young people.
Please feel free to contact me to find out more about me and to potentially schedule an appointment. I am friendly and caring and I take the whole person into account when I teach or tutor. I look forward to meeting you and moving forward with a plan to help you with your educational needs. Thank you for your consideration. Hello. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have worked as a reading tutor for grades K-12, and I was a Homebound teacher for Swartz Creek Schools where I also worked with students K-12 across all subject areas. I am currently working on a PhD in Teacher Education at Michigan State University; I teach courses in literacy and children's literature for elementary and secondary teachers (undergraduate and graduate levels). I also privately tutor a six year old boy for one family in Grand Blanc and an eleven year old girl and a ten year old boy for another family in DeWitt.
I have a B.A. In English from Michigan State University. I am a State of Michigan Certified Secondary English Teacher. I taught English/Language Arts in Lapeer and Genesee Counties for 25 years. I currently teach English as an Adjunct Instructor for Michigan State University.
I have taught GED preparation courses to adults and high school students, so I am familiar with the test format and the content across all of the subject areas. I have taught test taking skills for GED, MEAP, and ACT/MME tests. I have also proctored GED tests and attended training for scoring the writing portion of the test.
I have been a tutor and a certified teacher for thirty years. When I worked for Swartz Creek Schools, I was a secondary classroom teacher and a K-12 Homebound teacher for the district. When students were considered medically unable to attend school, I went to their homes twice a week to work with them to ensure they didn't fall behind in school. I worked with the teachers and school counselors to collect the assignments and materials and then delivered instruction to the students. I worked with students of all ages and across subject areas; I also communicated with the parents and care takers because I was in their homes. It is uniquely challenging one on one work that requires flexibility, sensitivity, creativity, communication, comprehensive knowledge of all subjects, and the ability to differentiate instruction.
