University of Michigan, Flint (Spanish TCP)
My name is Amy and I graduated from the University of Michigan-Flint with a Bachelor's Degree in Secondary Education as a Spanish major and history minor. I am a certified Spanish teacher with experience tutoring middle and high school students, as well as college students and adults learning the language independently. I am very passionate about teaching and I am patient and understanding, especially with children and teenagers. English is my native language and I continue to educate myself in the Spanish language and culture. I have shared the frustrations that many beginning Spanish speakers have experienced and I've learned how to overcome them. It is rewarding for me when I can help others overcome those obstacles so that they too can become very comfortable with the language. Knowing Spanish will undoubtedly increase the opportunities for success in the educational and occupational spectrum. I work with students of all ages in a public, but quiet, meeting place to work on such things as pronunciation, verbal and written comprehension and understanding of grammatical concepts. More emphasis will be placed in a particular area based on student needs. I am also willing and able to tutor students in English, reading and English grammar, which are subjects that I studied throughout my education and am very proficient in.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I took many English classes throughout my coursework to become a Spanish teacher. These courses included writing, linguistics, grammar and reading. I understood the material well then and still have a great command of it now.
As a Spanish Teacher, I have extensive knowledge of English grammar, as it is needed to learn a foreign language as well as teach it. Many of my students have remarked to me that their understanding of English improved after having taken Spanish. I also had several English college courses, which included writing, grammar and linguistics.
During my last year of college my coursework included education classes. One of my courses was Reading Improvement, which taught how to reach students that do not know how to read, or struggle with reading. I also have experience teaching my own son to read and helping younger family members with their reading throughout the years.
