I have 17 years of experience in education, serving as an English teacher, assistant principal, principal, curriculum director, and educational consultant. My Bachelor's degree is in English Language and Literature for secondary education, my Master's degree is in literature, and my Education Specialist degree and Ph.D. are both in educational leadership. I hold an active teaching certificate in both English and psychology for grades 6-12, my administrative certificate spans grades K-12, and I also hold a central office administration certification. Although I am new to Wyzant, I have tutored high school and college students for many years in English, specifically writing, reading, and grammar; test preparation for the ACT and (P)SAT; and editing/revising essays. I am passionate about education, and I love working directly with students to help them develop the skills they need to succeed both in school and in life. I relate well to students of all ages, and I focus on making tutoring sessions engaging and fun, while helping students better understand and apply relevant concepts according to their needs and goals. I particularly enjoy seeing students become more capable and confident as their performance improves, which is why teaching and tutoring are so rewarding.

I have taught a variety of English classes at the high school level, including AP Language and Composition, AP literature and Composition, American Literature, and World Literature, and I also ran a writing lab for students. I served as one of the national readers for the AP Language and Composition exam for the College Board, and I have done considerable work with teachers to help them apply best practices in instruction. Throughout my career, I have worked with students of all ability types, including gifted students and students with special needs. Although I am driven purely by student success rather than personal distinction, I have been honored and humbled by a number of awards over the years. I was Teacher of the Year at North Farmington High School, I was the only K-12 educator selected to the Oakland County Executive’s Elite 40 Under 40 Class of 2016, and I was selected as Eastern Michigan’s Scholar of Excellence.

In addition, I stay in close communication with parents as the partnership between the student, parents, and myself is crucial to accelerating student learning. I believe all students can learn and achieve at high levels with the proper support, and I look forward to the opportunity to help students make their best even better. Please reach out to me with any questions and to set up a tutoring session today!

I have 10 years of tutoring experience working with high school and college students (undergraduate through Ph.D.) on proofreading their writing, offering revision and editing support. I did not hire an outside editor for my own 274-page dissertation, which is a rare occurrence, as I was able to fully proofread my own work. Furthermore, I taught high school English at a High School for eight years, which gave me a tremendous amount of experience proofreading students' writing. I served as a National Advanced Placement Reader for The College Board for the AP English Language and Composition Exam, which means I scored essays for the annual AP exam. My Bachelor's Degree (BS) is in English Language and Literature, and my Master's Degree (MA) is in English Literature. My Secondary English Teacher Certification (Grades 6-12) remains active.

Basketball

I have been a lifelong basketball player, and I continue to compete in the Come Play Detroit Men's Draft Basketball League in which I was the 2nd leading scorer last season. In terms of coaching, I began as the men's varsity basketball assistant coach at a High School for one year. Then, I coached 4th-6th grade girls in a Community Education recreational league for two years, followed by coaching a 6th-8th grade girls' travel basketball team for the past three years. I'm proud of the growth my players have shown, their team spirit, and their many accomplishments (multiple undefeated seasons and championships). I am interested in helping young players further develop their dribbling, passing, shooting, and rebounding skills while also helping them improve their athleticism, footwork, defense, and overall basketball knowledge, all of which leads to greater confidence and enjoyment of the game.

great teacher. extreme helpful

My son had to write an essay on the Canterbury Tales for a sophomore English class. Phillip was prepared for the session and had reviewed the tales in advance. He helped with analysis, adding supporting details, and organizing the main points. I would unequivocally recommend him.

Great lesson!

We went over my AP Lang rhetorical analysis and Mr.P gave me some really beneficial insight about my writing. He also provided other prep materials to help me prepare for the test in May.

I am glad I was able to meet with your son and help him gain a better understanding of what AP Language and Composition Exam essay readers are looking for in student responses to the essay prompts. I perhaps have never worked with a student who picked up the information as quickly as your son did, which was really impressive!

Phillip is outstanding teacher.

My daughter got SAT reading lessons with Phillip. After 1st lesson, she already has changed her views on the SAT test. Phillip taught strategies and she can apply it to the test immediately. My kid and I are satisfied with his lessons.

Sumun, I really appreciate your feedback as it has meant a great deal to me to help your daughter improve her skills and boost her confidence in relation to the SAT. She is a diligent, attentive student with a terrific attitude who will certainly do well when she takes the SAT in the near future!

Informative experienced instruction.

I took away tools for annotating first thing. Made great suggestion for future reads to inform my writing. Examined past writing and gave feedback. I will use P. again.

Elliot, 6 lessons with Phillip

I'm glad you found the session valuable, Elliot. I appreciate your diligence as a student as it is impressive that you are so proactive by investing time during the summer to sharpen your skills in preparation for the upcoming school year. That mindset will serve you well in school and beyond!

Great ACT Tutor

From session # 1, my daughter felt much more comfortable about how to approach the ACT test. Phillip offered her instruction but also helpful hints on how to approach each section of the test. She was so much more confident after just one session. Highly recommend Phillip.

Michele, 9 lessons with Phillip
Tutor responded:

Thank you for your kind words, Michele. I have been impressed with how well your daughter has grasped the concepts, both related to specific content as well as test-taking strategies that can boost her score. She is a wonderful student to work with, and I am looking forward to our upcoming sessions together to build further upon this foundation and to enhance her preparation for the upcoming ACT exam.

Amazing writing tutor (with extensive knowledge of the AP lang test)!

I came to Phillip with only a week left before the AP lang exam. I had not taken the corresponding AP course, so I really did not know anything about the exam format/grading/timing/etc. Not only did Phillip provide me with helpful exam resources and thoughtful analysis of my essays, he also gave me lots of needed encouragement! The fact that he has read thousands of AP lang exam essays as an AP grader really made his tutoring excellent. After only two lessons, I felt very well prepared for the exam. Anyone who needs help with AP lang exam prep should come to Philip.

Patient, Detailed, and Effective

After a couple of tutoring sessions for AP English Language and Composition, Phillip has really improved my confidence for the demanding essays on the test. Having someone who knows exactly what the AP graders are looking for has been a tremendous help.
