Hello! My name is Ludmila. I graduated from Moscow State University with a Masters in Journalism. In Russia, I worked for a newspaper as a writer, was a Russian language tutor to foreigners and worked as a Russian tutor on a TV program for foreign students. When I came to the United States in 1991, I continued writing for newspapers, both in Russian and in English. Later, I started teaching children Russian and French in public and private schools. Moreover, I taught these languages to adults in a business setting in one-on-one private lessons and on-site group classes. My tutoring methods are dependent on the student’s age, previous knowledge of the Russian language and the interest of the individual. I have a unique approach that has proven to be very effective in providing customized tutoring services to my students. I enjoy working with people and helping them discover new languages. In watching my students grow linguistically, I feel that I have provided them with a very useful skill and have given them an extra tool to succeed and excel in the world.

Working as a journalist for a Russian newspaper provided me with an opportunity to explore a wide range of writing styles in the Russian language. I always create an individualized, flexible and entertaining environment in my lessons. When I teach children, I include games and activities in order to make the study of a foreign language more interesting and engaging for them. With my adult students, I concentrate on their objectives for learning a new language and tailor my curriculum to their goals. I have utilized different materials in my instructional style, including textbooks and manuals, as well as different exercises that I create specifically for each student, with the student’s ambitions in mind. Such an approach ensures that my students are successful in their educational endeavor. I give my students unusual and interesting home assignments in order to keep their education interesting. When they come for a class, I not only check their work, but we discuss the mistakes and difficulties the student may have had in completing the assignment. I also have a wide array of knowledge of Russian culture, literature and history. I can provide my students with more than just a lesson in the Russian alphabet and a few key phrases; I give my students a complete experience that not only provides them with a new language skill set, but also enriches their knowledge of the Russian culture as a whole. I believe that this type of experience raises the student’s enthusiasm for the subject and allows the language to sink in and stay with him or her long term.

Russian

I started tutoring the Russian language in preparatory courses for people entering higher education when I was a student in Moscow State University, Department of Journalism. After graduating from the University, I continued professional teaching in TV Russian language classes for foreign junior college students. This experience in tutoring gave me the confidence to secure positions in the United States, teaching Russian at the high school and adult level at Cranbrook High School and Madison Community Adult Education, respectively. I always use different audio and video materials during my classes, which helps the student better understand and remember the foreign language. Being a native Russian speaker as well as a Russian journalist, I can enrich my teaching of Russian as a foreign language and tailor the lessons to each student in order to make the experience more interesting and diverse.
