About Evan

Hi, my name is Evan. I am a student at Wayne State University pursuing my Bachelor's Degree with a major in Computer Science and Mathematics. I transferred there from Schoolcraft College where I worked as a tutor as well as a teaching assistant for Organic Chemistry for two years. I have experience tutoring all levels of math, chemistry, ACT prep subjects, and first year calculus based physics. However, my main area of expertise is Computer Science. I have experience with multiple imperative and functional programming languages as well as knowledge of theoretical computer science. I have tutored C, C++, Java, Python, and Haskell.

As for my tutoring style, I believe that a tutor's job is not simply to explain the material to a student but to also help them become more self-sufficient students with better study skills and habits. I personally follow the Socratic method when I tutor and, therefore, I always try to make the students arrive at their own answers.

I prefer that tutoring sessions be held at a local library, Starbucks, or online. However I am also able to do in-home tutoring sessions if required.

I am sorry for the inconvenience of finding a new tutor. I have explained, however, that the commute situation changed between when I accepted the job, and when I said I could no longer tutor your son. Due to unforeseen circumstances I have to stay with my friend to give him rides for medical reasons for the next month, which was almost 35 minutes away, each way, from our meeting spot. In the end, I hope that the new tutor brings great results regardless. Good luck to your son!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I earned a 4.0 GPA in the subject and was routinely the top student in my class. My enthusiasm for Mathematics and facility with the material provided the impetus to research more deeply than the curriculum required, and hence I developed a more profound understanding of the subject matter.

My skill was recognized by my professors and I was recommended as a tutor at my university. In my time there I have learned to interact with students of diverse backgrounds, skill sets, talents, and learning styles. I honed the ability to transmit and explain the material by various methods tailored to the student, and I can with equal ease provide rigorous proofs as well as intuitive insight, employing verbal explanations as well as visual and tactile/kinaesthetic modes of communication.

C

While I prefer the OOP approach of C++, I do have experience using C and have done many algorithms including Knuth-Morris-Pratt substring finder, doubly linked lists, quicksort, merge sort etc. in C using C structs and dynamic memory allocation using malloc/free. I have tutored students in Computer Science (Java, C, C++, Python) for over a year and have a strong understanding of the logic required to excel in programming courses.

C++

I have studied C++ vigorously for two years. My completed projects include a fully function GUI-based Pong game with AI, Dijkstra's Lowest Cost Path Finding, self-made Fibonacci Heap, Doubly Linked List, and an A* Maze Solver with Graphical Maze Generator. I am currently implementing a github and I could link to code samples if required. I have tutored students in Computer Science (Java, C, C++, Python) for over a year and have a strong understanding of the logic required to excel in programming courses.

Calculus

As a Mathematics major, I have taken the usual four semester intro to Calculus/Differential equations along the two semesters of Analysis which takes a more theoretical approach to Calculus.

Chemistry

I earned a 4.0 GPA in the subject and was routinely the top student in my class. Before landing at my final major choice of Computer Science, I was hoping to go into Chemistry and I still have a passion for the subject. I have experience with high school chemistry, college-level General Chemistry, and Organic Chemistry.

Computer Science

As a Computer Science major, beyond simply knowing multiple programming languages, I have a strong background in Algorithm Design and Analysis from simply finding the BigO of an Algorithm to the thought process required in order to design new and efficient algorithms to solving problems.

Differential Equations

I had excelled in my Differential Equations class. I have a strong understanding of the subject from the simple separable equations to non-homogenous systems. I can help with the main methods of solving equations such as separation of variables, integrating factors, undetermined coefficients, variation of parameters, Laplace transforms, and Infinite Series.

Organic Chemistry

I have worked as a teaching assistant for three semesters of Organic Chemistry 1 and 2 as well as finished my Organic Chemistry with a 4.0 (99.5% combined Orgo 1 and 2). On top of this I have tutored Organic Chemistry privately for over two years. I am currently tutoring multiple students in the subject.

Python

I have programmed for over a year in Python for Github projects. In addition, I have tutored the subject "Introduction to Python" at the university for Computer Science majors for a semester. I have experience with Object-Oriented Python in addition to a more functional approach. I have experience with general Python, Iron Python, and the libraries Numpy and Pyplot used for scientific computing applications.

Very knowledgeable in C++

Evan taught me about constructors, creating functions within constructors, creating and passing objects. He was very patient with me, it takes me a min to grasp the concept. I would definitely use Evan again and recommend him as a great tutor. Thanks Evan!
