About Rhoda

I have enjoyed a long and rich life as a teacher of high school English. In the thirty-three years that I taught in the public school system, I was an Honors English teacher and an AP teacher. Along with my duties as the journalism adviser, I also taught in the Gifted/Talented Program at Wayne State University for exceptional students.

It was a natural step for me as a lover of the language and its grammar to work as an ACT/SAT tutor in the evenings and on the weekends. Before I retired from public school teaching, I created an after-school ACT class for the athletes in our school.

I like young people. They bring out the best in me, and I return the favor. My enthusiasm for understanding grammar and structure, so essential in performing well on college entrance exams, is contagious. I have evaluated the skills that are necessary for being successful in ACT and SAT, and I tailor my tutoring to the realities of the tests.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I have a Master's Degree in English Literature, ten years of experience in teaching development English at Wayne State University, and ten years of experience in teaching World Masterpieces at Lawrence Technological University. I have forty years of experience as a high school English teacher.

Grammar

I learned how to talk about the structure of language as the result of many years in the classroom. Because I am also a writer as well as a teacher, I think of the sentence as a pattern with infinite varieties. Although I was trained as a teacher of literature, I have learned how to talk about the craft of writing on-the-job and in many classrooms throughout the years in high schools, community colleges, and universities. My experience is my greatest strength, supported as it is by an excellent education.

SAT Writing

As a published writer of fiction and a trained journalism teacher, I bring my experience to the instruction of writing the SAT essay.

Writing

Since 2000, I was an instructor of composition for beginning and junior comp at Wayne State University. I also was a member of the team which was designed to improve the writing and comprehension skills of incoming students at Lawrence Technological University. I have a complete knowledge of grammar and sentence structure. My rapport with young people has always been part of my success as a teacher of writing.
