About Seena

I graduated from the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor majoring in Biochemistry with a minor in Math and will continue my education to the University of Toledo College of Medicine in the Fall of 2015. While in undergrad, I tutored fellow students in Algebra, Calculus, and Organic Chemistry. Over the last two years as a WyzAnt Tutor, I've helped many students achieve their goals in difficult subjects including AP chemistry/General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry, Algebra 2/Pre-Calc/Calc 1, and ACT/SAT Math prep.

I am a very patient individual who prides myself on going that extra mile to help my students achieve their academic goals. The more initiative the student shows, the harder I can push them to reach these goals. I've seen it all, and can help you focus on what will most likely be tested in your course. After our lessons, I usually find worksheets for my students to complete to help reinforce the topics, because I believe half the battle of learning is repetition and immersion in the material.

In addition, since I've gone through the pre-med hurdle myself and am now beginning the medical school route, I can give personal guidance on what a student should focus on in order to get into their desired professional/graduate program.

I would love to help you to reach your academic goals. There's nothing like that light bulb going on in a student's head and seeing that "aha" expression when the material has finally been understood. And there's no better feeling than seeing your students gain the confidence to tackle their future academic and life challenges.

P.S. Due to the constraints on my schedule with regards to medical school, I am in the Toledo area for most of the month and in the Farmington Hills area only 1 or 2 weekends a month. My schedule is quite flexible though, as most medical school classes are not mandatory. For the online sessions, I would be able to meet with students via Skype and IDroo (online whiteboard) when needed.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I took the ACT twice and scored in the 96 and 97% tiles on this section in those two examinations. I went on to take AP BC Calculus and AP Stats my senior year and received a 5 in both subjects. I then went on to minor in math at U of M - Ann Arbor. I have several workbooks for ACT math that would be greatly beneficial to any student trying to master this section.

Algebra 1

Having the fundamentals down in Algebra will be crucially useful for a student down the line in any future Math, Chemistry, and Physics courses. Algebra, by itself, may come across as boring to a middle/high school student. However, if this subject can be applied to the real world, I believe the student will have a much easier time learning the material.

Algebra 2

Having the fundamentals down in Algebra will be crucially useful for a student down the line in any future Math, Chemistry, and Physics courses. Algebra, by itself, may come across as boring to a middle/high school student. However, if this subject can be applied to the real world, I believe the student will have a much easier time learning the material.

Biochemistry

This was my major in undergrad, and I also took the three courses closely tied to this subject field: Molecular Biology, Genetics, and Physiology. I also have a great background in Organic Chemistry, which is crucial when students are trying to understand the mechanisms of Glycolysis, Glycogenolysis, the Citric Acid Cycle, the Urea Cycle, and other important metabolic pathways.

Calculus

I took the AP BC Calculus exam in high school and received a 5. I went on to take Calc III and Calc IV at Michigan, and received an A in both classes. I went on to take an advanced engineering mathematics course, and received an A- in that course as well. Calculus was actually my favorite topic in math, because there are so many real-world applications in this subject. From projectile motion, to carbon-dating, to enzyme kinetics, and microeconomic theory, there are many different applications of this subject. While Algebra and Trigonometry may seem boring, Calculus should never be boring.

Having the fundamentals down pat in Calculus will tremendously help a student in future math/science/engineering courses in college. As a science major, I've seen many students flinch once any calculus becomes involved in the course. However, if a student really understands this subject, this will give them a leg up throughout their college courses.

Chemistry

I took AP Chem in high school and received credit to pass out of the introductory sequence at Michigan. I went on to take a sophomore level Gen Chem course at U of M and received an A-, and I took an upper level Calculus based Physical Chemistry course and received an A+.

General Chemistry itself is boring, but if the student sees its application to other topics, I believe that would kickstart the students desire to learn the topic which would better help them learn the material.

Organic Chemistry

I have the most experience tutoring Organic Chemistry of all the sciences, as this was the subject I primarily tutored students in during undergrad. My subsequent courses in Biochemistry heavily built on this Organic Chemistry knowledge.

Organic Chemistry can be very difficult if you take an approach to just brute memorize everything. However, the beauty of the subject is that if you learn the mechanisms of each reaction and how the electrons logically flow, it will make learning the reactions much easier (which a majority of people have the most problem with).

Precalculus

Pre-Calc is the math course that ties everything together learned from Geometry, Algebra, and Trigonometry. It is crucial that a student gets a fundamental understanding in this area, as many of the material one sees in Pre-Calc, they will also see in Calculus. From my experience, most people have problems with the Geometry, Algebra, and Trig portions of Calculus, and not the actual Calculus concepts themselves.

SAT Math

I never took the actual SAT exam in high school. However, I took both SAT I and SAT II Math sections and scored a 780 and 770 respectively. The SAT Math covers Geometry and Algebra, and with enough practice, any student can master it. I will help the student master the exam and give them the confidence and insight to ace this portion of the test.

Trigonometry

Students usually get exposed to Trig in Geometry through SoaCahToa. Then, they'll either get a full on exposure through Honors Algebra II, or their regular pre-calc class. Trig is almost as important as Algebra, because its a fundamental language of math. Many applications in Calculus and Physics use Trig because many things in life happen at angles. Trig is not a hard topic to understand if it's given enough practice, just like Algebra.

Greatest tutor ever. — When I first contacted Seena I was in dire need of help. I really could not understand organic chemistry, and I thought I never would. When I first met with Seena he was kind and patient. He really made sure I understood the concepts. He broke down the organic chemistry concepts in a way that no professor or tutor ever did. He also made sure that I made the most of each session. Sometimes I wanted ...
