About Barbara

I enjoy helping students love learning and discover their talents, while strengthening skills in any subject area. Through tutoring, my students feel more comfortable about learning in all situations, confident about their potential, and motivated about new opportunities. We work together in fun and meaningful ways, so everyone makes progress. We tackle challenges simply - one step at a time.

Our tutoring sessions will be fun, creative, productive and memorable. Specific steps include: identify your specific learning needs; set goals and a practice schedules; establish a manageable plan with measurable outcomes; discuss questions and concerns; welcome parent expertise at any time; contact other teachers as requested; adjust the learning process to achieve understanding and celebrate progress.

I have been a classroom teacher, curriculum coordinator and career coach for more than 10 years at public and private schools. My certification includes highly qualified status in all subjects K-8 and Fine Art K-12. I also became TESOL certified while volunteering with international university students and hosting families from all over the world.

Whether working one-on-one, in small groups or with large assemblies, I am passionate about learning and teaching. My career began in a Montessori preschool. After 6 months I opened a new Kindergarten program and eventually taught Fine Arts to 200 elementary students. My next school position in Gifted/Enrichment/Career Education required tutoring and coaching in all core subjects at all levels K through HS. I have always honored the child at the center of learning, surrounded by their primary support network – their parents and immediate family members.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions as you search for the best tutor for you or your child. I look forward to working with the students and parents who select me for this special privilege. To everyone else, my sincerest wishes as you continue on your learning journey!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Career Development

I believe Career Development is about getting to know YOURSELF: as a learner and a worker. This understanding will benefit you in any job throughout your life.

Those who request career coaching will accomplish the following: match your unique learning patterns with complementary careers; discover requirements for professional growth; identify options for training and college studies; find scholarships and financial support; explore the occupational outlook and potential earnings; receive employment search guidelines. Everyone can develop a clear and practical action plan for success.

I taught Career Development to students in grades 6-12, and worked with special programs in Alternative Education and Workforce Development. Our District Superintendent and HS counselors selected me to launch the Education Development Plan for 1,000 students. This led to work with the College Career Center and the honor of presenting at the statewide Career Development conference and the Governor's Education Summit.

College Counseling

I coordinated independent study and career development with our HS and community college, utilizing effective resources for success.

As a workforce case manager and teacher of alternative learning, I counseled young adults with various learning needs, abilities and challenges.

With background in Careers by Choice, WorkKeys Training, and Comprehensive Guidance & Counseling, I helped students identify their learning strengths, and plan a course of action to achieve success.

Common Core

I currently write curriculum content for a news company to teach English Language Arts, using common core anchor standards.

During a year-long post as State and Federal Program Specialist, my responsibilities included: expand Common Core professional development for teachers; help Curriculum Coordinators choose quality programs to strengthen Common Core learning; develop programs with School Leaders that met compliance requirements for grant funding.

Drawing

Pencil is my favorite medium - though I have studied all art forms, earning a BA at Rutgers University as a Fine Arts and Education major.

My work has been exhibited in libraries, galleries, schools and community centers.

It will be great fun to help you learn more about art and fine tune your skill as an artist.

Elementary (K-6th)

I greatly enjoy teaching students from preK to grade 6, and had my own classroom for over 10 years.

As Gifted and Enrichment Coordinator, I also tutored students with specific academic interests, abilities and challenges.

My favorites subjects include Reading, Writing, beginning 'hands-on' Math and Science, story-based Social Studies, and Fine Arts. I believe Listening and Speaking are also important to Language Arts.

I am a published author with Penguin Books, and exhibited fine artist. My Masters studies is in Elementary Education Methods.

Elementary Math

Math is more exciting than most people imagine. As a certified classroom teacher for grades K-8, I have taught more than 450 students.

I also worked with accelerated Elementary Math students - creating ways to turn problems inside out and upside down. We approached computations like a puzzle or mystery, and equations like a game.

ESL/ESOL

I have taught students from many countries - and my family served more than 10 years in Community Volunteers for International Programs. I also traveled as a published author and Fulbright researcher in Western and Eastern Europe.

My students build a solid foundation with English: Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking, Pronunciation and Grammar that meet proficiency standards. My students also develop learning comfort, confidence and motivation; set short and long term goals; and celebrate accomplishments.

Grammar

I currently write education curriculum content for a News company to help students learn. Good grammar is important for everyone to understand what they are reading and thinking about.

As a published author, I enjoyed working Penguin Book editors using grammar to polish the story.

Handwriting

As an Elementary classroom teacher for more than 10 years, I helped young learners write for meaning and understanding.

We began with prehensile exercises, strengthened fine motor skills, and have fun writing in the sand, in the sky, on posters or note cards, for any purpose at all.

As a fine artist, I also enjoy manuscript writing.

You can improve your handwriting so that it becomes a work of art.

Phonics

I taught Kindergarten and Developmental Kindergarten for more than 10 years, and worked 6 months in a Montessori preschool.

My program:
- focuses on sensory learning that supports comfortable speaking and careful listening;
- includes fun phonics exercises, favorite stories, group choral reading/singing, and play-acting;
- meets the diverse needs of beginning readers.

I volunteer in a preschool, supporting various phonics activities so all children will learn to appreciate reading comfortably. As a vocalist, I still enjoy reading and singing aloud.

Proofreading

Clear written communication is important in every class and on every job. I especially appreciated the ability to proofread when my manuscript was accepted by Penguin Books in London for publication.

My students begin at their own level of proficiency; work at a pace that is comfortable and productive; set short and long term goals; aim for editing to become a natural process.

Reading

I greatly enjoy teaching reading to students from preK to grade 6, and had my own classroom for over 10 years. I believe Listening, Speaking and Writing are also important to Language Arts - so we read aloud, write stories and listen to stories.

As Gifted and Enrichment Coordinator, I tutored students with specific academic interests, abilities and challenges. As a published author with Penguin Books, I have many stories and experiences to share.

Sewing

I have been sewing since childhood - creating my own designs, altering patterns and garments, and crafting innovative projects.

A college course in pattern-making gave me many new ideas.

I had the pleasure of helping an adult student sew her first performance gown of velvet, chiffon and satin! She has become a very accomplished sewer.

I can help you have fun learning to create your own handmade items.

Spelling

I love words! and there are many tricks to make spelling fun and easy. I can help you improve your skill as a speller, as I have more than 450 students during 10+ years as a classroom teacher.

Vocabulary

As I writer and published author, I especially enjoy finding the BEST word.

As readers, we can improve understanding and enjoyment through spending more time with words - vocabulary. There are tips and games that will make learning vocabulary fun and easy.

Writing

i love writing - poems, stories, letters, quizzes, even essays. But I struggled with writing as a young student. So I greatly enjoy others learn to enjoy and improve their writing.

As a classroom teacher for more than 10 years, I helped beginning writers and elementary students improve writing. Eventually many shared in the publication of a class book. I never dreamed of become a published author. Now I know that it is possible for anyone.
