About Anthony

I have 15 + years of teaching and tutoring experience both at university and am the owner of a private tutoring company that has contracted with Michigan State for many years, ghost written test prep materials for large companies, and provided educational services to domestic and foreign government programs.

You are welcome to split my fee with other students without additional cost.

I am a full time data scientist on leave ( until retirement from gainful employment ) from the theoretical physics PhD program at MSU. I have studied physics through quantum field theory and beyond, and my knowledge of physics compares very favorably to that of the typical US theoretical physics PhD, while my knowledge of mathematics, though substantially less than that of a good mathematician, is substantially greater than that of the average US theoretical physics PhD. I did my undergraduate work in mathematics at the University of Minnesota. I hold MA junior high school and high school teaching licenses for physics and mathematics, both for grades 5 -12. I'm egalitarian, eclectic in approach, and eager to help students optimize their hand and avoid pitfalls, particularly pitfalls that, in a just world, would not exist. I can help with:

•AP Calculus AB/BC
•Math SAT II level I or level IIC
•Most college mathematics courses
•Any physics
•PSAT
•SAT
•ACT
•GRE
•GMAT
•MCAT, except for biological sciences ( I got an 'A 'in biology but my conservation biologist friend helped me and living things frighten me; I know organic chemistry but there are people on campus who are much better at organic chem than I will ever be )
•LSAT
•MTEL general exam, physics, and mathematics
•MCAS

I have perfect scores on many math and science standardized exams, and have gotten 99th percentile scores on the verbal sections of the PSAT, SAT, GRE, and GMAT. I recently (12/3/2009) sat for the GRE to get a current score to support a fellowship application, and received an 800 on the quantitative section and a 790 on the verbal section. I have edited college applications, graduate school applications, grant applications, and one successful Rhodes Scholarship application. I love physics, but sometimes I wish I had been a dramaturge, and I think I'd make a good one : ) You can be confident that I can help you with the subjects I've listed that are outside the sciences, and in fact I am an excellent one-stop-shopping resource for your own or your child's college application campaign.

I have taken a year of general and organic chemistry and gotten A's in biology, and I've studied PChem. There are better tutors for biology and for organic chemistry, but I'm a very good inorganic, general, A.P, and high school chem tutor.

I have tutored privately in the Wellesley area for about a year. I have 6 years of college teaching and tutoring experience, and I am happy to share references with you.

I am good at helping students see fast gains on standardized exams scores, by tapping into what they have already learned and also inculcating confidence as well as an understanding of the game theory of the exam.

My style is to help you use the muscles you have already built in your academic training and general life before giving you new tools, with the goal being to help you discover that the thing in front of you is not all that scary after all. I want you to, as quickly as possible, no longer need my services nor those of any other tutor. I like sharing my strengths and seeing my students succeed.

Good luck, and please email any questions!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

College Counseling

I have edited successful college, MBA, scholarship, graduate fellowship, and grant applications, as well as one winning Rhodes scholarship essay. I have also managed strategy for several college application campaigns.

Differential Equations

I have a B.S. in mathematics from the university of minnesota, 2002, and am currently a PhD student in theoretical nuclear physics. I can easily tutor for courses in differential equations.

Discrete Math

B.S., Mathematics, university of minnesota, 2002, currently a PhD student in theoretical physics. I can easily tutor discrete mathematics.

GMAT

I taught a GMAT math prep course for the Princeton Review briefly before accepting another job. I got the job by scoring 99th percentile on a practice exam and by having a good trial teaching interview. I also have a math degree, and am working on a physics PhD, and have great standardized exam scores.

Linear Algebra

I have a B.S in mathematics and for that degree took the year long graduate level sequence in linear algebra.

Logic

I have helped several undergraduate math, c.s., and philosophy students, as well as two philosophy PhD students, with graduate level logic, and I studied logic while obtaining my undergraduate degree.

MCAT

I'm a PhD student in theoretical physics with years of experience teaching and tutoring physics. I also have perfect scores on the quantitative sections of many standardized exams, and 99th percentile scores on the verbal sections of many exams. I can readily tutor for all sections of the MCAT except for the biological sciences section.

Praxis

I hold high school and junior high school teaching licenses, for physics, mathematics, and general science. For licensure I took, and received a perfect score on, the teaching exam given in Massachusetts. I have taught and tutored for standardized exams for 15 years.

Study Skills

I have years of experience teaching and tutoring physics and math to college students with a wide variety of preparedness and interest. I also have developed coping strategies for handling my own workload while caring for my daughter and spending time with my family. I am happy to help with inculcating good study skills.

Very kind and patient tutor

My daughter loves Anthony. He has helped her grasp math and physics concepts that are hard for her. I am thrilled to have found someone she can learn from and with whom she's connected.
