About Donna

I enjoy working with students on a one-on-one basis and helping them to meet their personal and academic goals.

In my retirement I continue to enjoy working with learners nationwide as they strive to improve their writing skills and advance their education. I have written stories and poetry since I was a young child and throughout my life I have honed my talent. When I was undergraduate student at the University of Iowa I was selected, from over 1000 applicants, to be a member of the prestigious Iowa's Writer's Workshop. As a graduate assistant at Michigan State University I edited/proofed journal articles for my professor prior to publication. In later years, while pursuing my 2nd master's degree in rhetoric and composition, I was recognized as an exceptional writer by my peers and professors.

I am also fluent in American Sign Language and passionate about teaching others. My students learn 100's of signs, the importance of facial expression and body language, as well as the grammar, history, and culture. I use ASL daily to converse with my husband who is Deaf and to teach functional signs to my mother who has lost much of her hearing. One of my greatest joys of my former professional career was giving a young deaf child his first language at the age of three.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Proofreading

When I was an undergraduate student at the University of Iowa I was selected to participate in the highly prestigious Iowa's Writer's Workshop. Over 1200 applicants applied and only 21 were accepted. In more recent years, while I was a graduate student at Michigan State University, I worked as a graduate assistant and edited my professor's journal articles prior to publication. When I returned to college for my second master's degree, I earned excellent marks in my rhetoric and composition classes. The professors in the writing department at the University of Michigan, all of whom were published authors, considered me to be a notable and accomplished writer. As a retiree, I am affiliated with online writer's critique groups and continue to write stories, memoirs, and poetry.

I am a voracious reader and have an insatiable love of language. My love of language carries over to my writing and I have a thorough understanding of the rules that govern the art. I enjoy sharing this knowledge with others so that they, too, can appreciate expressions of creativity, dispense information and knowledge from the written word, and compose a written piece using correct grammar, mechanics, and syntax with a rich and sophisticated verbiage, as well as understand and implement proper techniques to develop voice, intent, characters, scenes, and flow. I am an astute reader and provide an excellent service that is both in-depth and precise.

Sign Language

I have an associates degree in Deaf Studies from Mott Community College (took 6 levels of ASL). I taught students who were deaf and HH from ages 3-through high school (I taught the 3-year old his first language). I have a husband who is deaf-blind and have been his conduit for communication in a variety of situations.

Study Skills

I am a retired special education teacher and have taught study skills to children in both middle and high school. I have also taught test-taking strategies and reading for understanding using specific strategies to help the student comprehend and recall material. In addition, I have successfully taught test-prep strategies for this same age range.

Great Teacher

I have learned so many signs in the span of 3 lessons. Donna can really get a good sense of your skill level and how much you can learn in one lesson. The method Donna uses really has helped me learn what would normally take a couple months to learn.
