About Trevor

I am a Cornell graduate and soon to be PhD looking for an opportunity to share my passion for science through tutoring. My academic career has given me training in engineering and scientific research which gives me a unique perspective on science in the real world.

I have experience teaching high school students, college undergraduates and even PhD students. I am a patient teacher and hope to develop a thorough understanding and maybe some excitement for the subject.

I am a patient teacher and am willing to tailor my tutoring style to meet anyone's specific needs. Contact me if you would like to set up regular sessions or maybe just an emergency cram session for the big test. I am here to help.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Calculus

As an engineer, I am familiar with both formal calculus courses as well as how calculus is applied to the real world.

Chemistry

I have worked in various chemistry and biology labs making nanoparticles and chemically manipulating their properties. My degree in Materials Science and Engineering involved course work in chemistry and materials chemistry. I have also taught high school, undergraduate and graduate students in chemistry.

Differential Equations

As an engineer, I have experience with differential equations both as a formal course (taken at Cornell University) as well as there applications in other engineering courses. My GPA at Cornell was 3.1 out of 4. I continued my engineering education at a PhD program at Penn State University. My GPA at Penn State was 3.6 out of 4.

Linear Algebra

As an engineering student, I have experience with linear algebra both as a formal math course and in its application in materials science and engineering. The mechanical properties of materials are often expressed using matrices and understanding these properties requires a thorough understanding of linear algebra.

Microsoft Excel

Microsoft Excel is a tool I have used from high school through graduate school. I use it for simple calculations, organizing course grades, data manipulation, and graphing. I have learned many short cuts and tricks to make using the spread sheet less tedious and more straight forward.

Microsoft PowerPoint

In addition to my personal experience making PowerPoint presentations in college and graduate school, I have formally taught undergraduate students how to use PowerPoint as an effective communication tool. The course is a materials science and engineering lab course which emphasized professional oral scientific communication.

Microsoft Word

Microsoft Word has been my default word processor from high school through graduate school. I have written many papers using this software and am currently writing my PhD dissertation using Microsoft Word.

Organic Chemistry

As an undergraduate at Cornell, I worked in a few different labs which involved organic chemistry. The first was a polymer materials science lab where I studied phase changes in block-co-polymer systems. The second was a bioengineering lab where we embedded nanoparticles in organic polymer thin films for a medical diagnostic device. Additionally, my materials chemistry course work emphasized organic chemistry as a required subject.

Physics

I have been tutoring other students in physics since high school, where I received a 5 on the AP exam. Most recently, I use physics to teach undergraduate engineers how to characterize different materials including nanomaterials.

Study Skills

When teaching at Penn State, I prided myself in helping my students organize the enormous amount of information they had to process. I feel that helping a student organize this information is the first step in developing their study skills.

After the initial organization, I emphasize critical thinking and understanding the context of the information as a study method. When a student can ask questions about his study material then answer those questions, they are sufficiently prepared for almost any test.

Patient and knowledgeable

Trevor was very familiar with the subject and had very good methods for obtaining the correct answer. Will most definitely be working with him again. Thanks!
