(graduated) University of Michigan Ann Arbor (Master's)
Hi I'm Rachel! I am two-time graduate of the University of Michigan-- Ann Arbor. For my bachelor's degree, I majored in English and minored in medieval and early modern studies. A month after graduation I returned to school and earned my master's degree in secondary education with certification in English and history. While I was in school, I worked on a literary magazine, facilitated sessions for international students and faculty to practice their everyday English skills, planned and executed ESL lessons at the local library, tutored and provided after school homework help, worked with immigrant girls in London, England to strengthen their English language skills, and worked in the university's writing center.
I was also fortunate enough to spend a year studying English literature and history at University College London, ranked as one of the top-five universities in the world to study humanities.
I have spent some time teaching, but found my true passion was being able to work individually with students. I have worked at an large international learning center and also as an AmeriCorps VISTA. My philosophy is to work on building core competencies and understanding of subjects. Quick fixes are harmful in the long term.
My undergraduate school years were spent refining my writing, reading, and research skills while my time in graduate school was spent learning how to teach these skills to others.
I spent this past year as an AmeriCorps VISTA working on college access and readiness for high school students in Detroit. I spent time with students looking at their strengths and interests to find possible paths to follow in college. We looked at financing college, filling out scholarship applications and essays, determining important qualities a school had to have, and any other question a student had.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
