"If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart." ~Nelson Mandela

As a World Language student, I have always been fascinated with and proud of being able to express myself in another language. I have felt a sense of accomplishment when I have spoken to other Spanish-speaking individuals and they understood me as well as I them. Not only were we able to exchange ideas, but we were able to share culture. Culture can be transmitted without the native language, but not very successfully. Without the charming nuances of its native language, culture is merely facts, figures and history.
I remember learning Spanish in its cultural context, first in High School as my Spanish Teacher taught us Latin dances. In between the "uno, dos, cha cha cha" I discovered a world of excitement that would forever influence my life, both professionally and personally. Because I chose to study Spanish, I have been able to travel internationally, make friends across the waters and bring that knowledge and love of language and culture back to my students.
As a World Language Teacher, my goal is to inspire in my students the thirst for something new and different, something that is unlike themselves and just as valuable. To be able to value oneself and one’s culture, and at the same time value the culture of another, is the most important thing one can do considering our global economy and our ever-increasing contact with other parts of the world.
Two passions that I have in this world are the passions to teach and to help. I believe that being a teacher and influencing others is the most rewarding experience that can ever be known. I have taught as a Spanish Instructor in the Detroit Public Schools and other various institutions of higher learning and provided Peer Support for DPS for nineteen years. Within that time span I have developed many teaching techniques and management strategies and I have grown close to many of my students. Some of them traveled with me overseas to the Dominican Republic, where I have lived and traveled extensively, and we continue to keep in close contact.

I take an eclectic approach to teaching the Spanish language, incorporating a variety of methodologies. The goal of language learning is communication and appreciation of other cultures. I do understand the value of not only being able to speak and understand the Spanish language, but also the exceeding importance of being able to read and write it. This is the reason I take so many approaches to linguistic proficiency. Making my students feel comfortable to take risks and ask questions is essential to their successful language acquisition.
I have lived, traveled and studied in the Dominican Republic. I also completed overseas studies in Queretaro, Mexico, and Panama City, Panama. Puerto Rico is another Spanish-speaking destination I have visited. Being a lover of dance, I have learned many Latin dances, taught my students the basics of those dances and even was part of a semi-professional Cuban casino dance troupe here in the Detroit Area.
I have been able to witness first hand how I have impacted my students and their lives. Countless stories have I heard from former students who have told me that, because of the overseas trip I sponsored, they have decided to major in Spanish or that they were able to have a lengthy conversation with a native speaker they met by chance. Those moments are the most fulfilling for me, knowing that I have helped cultivate another generation of Spanish-Speakers. Every year another group of individuals emerges, who know how to not only speak to head but also to their heart.

If you are as excited about learning Spanish as I am, then contact me so that we can set up tutoring time. I would love to talk to you and find out how I can help you!
