I like to be attentive to how my students express themselves and always aim to present material in a way that is in sync with how they learn. This has allowed students I've worked with to feel comfortable opening up about their interests and frustrations with me so that I can make the subject more relevant to them and create more motivation to learn. I always try to gear the way I teach to my students' learning styles and make them feel less self-conscious and more confident about making mistakes and explaining their thought process. I am good at convincing my students that they will see more rewards from their persistence. I have worked with several students who were scoring in the seventies on tests and quizzes when I started working with them who then began to see dramatic results with scores in the nineties in a fairly short time. One even went on to minor in Classics.

I use various tools like mnemonic devices and English word derivatives to make vocabulary and form-memorization easier. I also have students draw charts showing the patterns and similarities among various noun and verb endings they need to know so they can truly master these fundamentals.

Though I went on to earn a degree in Latin and Greek literature in college, I really think my passionate interest in this subject was nurtured and allowed to thrive because of the extremely solid foundation I received in Latin grammar from one outstanding high school teacher. I hope to emulate his outstanding teaching ability and allow others to succeed the way he allowed me.

I've tutored students in Latin and Greek for over 10 years. I received a perfect score on the National Latin Exam and Latin SAT II and am familiar with preparing students for these exams, as well as for AP Latin.

Some highlights of my educational and teaching background are that I've graduated from Reginald Foster's program in Rome for the practice of oral Latin and daily sight reading. I also did post-graduate training with Dr. Stephen Daitz, the foremost scholar on the classical pronunciation of ancient Greek and Latin. I received an award for being the highest ranking student in Greek and Latin Literature in my college's Classics department. I am a member of the American Classical League and have attended some of their national conferences and seminars on the teaching of Latin. I also have experience creating educational materials for intermediate students of Latin online for a website that publishes full length texts in foreign languages and uses editors to write different types of explanatory material and educational glosses to aid students' reading.

I look forward to helping you meet your specific goals.

Grammar,

Grammar

My educational background in Latin and Greek has given me an in-depth knowledge and mastery of English grammar. Both these languages require that you understand a wide range of nuanced grammatical constructions and reward comparison with English grammar. For example, even in high school my fantastically thorough Latin teacher would teach us 5 ways in English to translate a superlative adjective in Latin into English: a) the most blank b) most blank c) exceedingly blank d) surpassingly blank e) passing blank (Shakespearean). This in-depth knowledge has made me an expert tutor in English grammar and sentence structure. As my resume illustrates, I also worked as a college level writing tutor for the Educational Opportunity Program's Academic Resource Center where I received experience helping adults craft professionally written essays and papers in English.

Greek

I earned a bachelor's degree from a top classics department in the U.S. in Greek (and Latin) literature. This means I had to take courses in ancient Greek for every semester of my college career starting in my sophomore year in order to obtain this distinction as opposed to someone who obtains a degree in classical studies under another focus such as ancient history, archaeology or philosophy (such students are usually required to take a semester or year of ancient Greek). In addition to mastering the fundamentals of Greek grammar, I took separate courses studying the Iliad and Odyssey, Euripides, Herodotus, the lyric poets, and Lysias, in the original language. My background in the language is also bolstered by my dual major in the grammatically parallel and culturally/historically tied language of Latin. In my senior of college I did an independent study to perform the entire Medea in the original language. After college I also studied the Restored Classical Pronunciation of ancient Greek under Professor Emeritus Stephen G. Daitz, a renowned scholar on the subject. Lastly, I have currently been tutoring a student in beginning Greek grammar over the past year, so teaching the fundamentals of the language is very fresh. I have also tutored other students in Greek in the past and am looking for opportunities to teach New Testament Greek (Koine) at a church.

Bradley is a native Brooklynite who began taking Latin as part of the humanities program at his High School. Inspired by a wonderfully passionate, fun, but rigorous teacher and determined to continue his studies after he completed the highest level of Latin offered by his school, Bradley enrolled in college-level Latin and Greek courses at Brooklyn College while still in high school. During college Bradley’s interest and passion in these languages and cultures was unparalleled. He founded the school’s first Classics club, took almost exclusively upper-level and graduate literature courses in Latin and ancient Greek and studied oral Latin and Latin sight reading through a rigorous summer program in Rome taught by the Pope's Latin secretary. Bradley won departmental honors in both Latin and Greek and graduated cum laude in Classics with a concentration in Greek and Latin literature from SUNY Buffalo. His passion for sharing knowledge and tutoring and teaching these subjects began during his time at Brooklyn College as he helped older classmates with their coursework. During college, he worked in the school's Educational Opportunity Program to help students compose and edit their papers for their remedial English classes. After graduating, he obtained a yearlong appointment teaching Latin at a public high school and attended a national conference of Latin teachers and scholars to learn different methods and approaches to teaching Latin. He has been tutoring Latin and ancient Greek in his spare time to people ranging from curious middle schoolers to retirees for the past 8 years. This past year, Bradley has decided to expand his business and pursue his passion for sharing Latin and ancient Greek full-time. Although the civilization of the people who spoke and wrote in these languages is thousands of years old, the study of ancient Rome and ancient Greece has a lot to offer us in today’s world.

Classics

I obtained my B.A. cum laude in Classics. Not only did I make Classics the major focus of my college education but I began taking courses in classical civilization at Brooklyn College through a consortium program while I was still in high school. There I attended lectures on ancient Greek and Roman history and literature as well as a course on Medieval Latin. After college I also worked as an editor researching and writing annotations on ancient history for an entire ancient historical text ( viz. Suetonius' Life of the Divine Caesar) . In 2004 I also studied Classics overseas in Rome where I studied and observed all the major archaeological sites and ancient art museums in depth. I also have a deep knowledge and love of history that has driven me to study the art, history, and science of antiquity very widely outside of my formal education.

Great Tutor

Bradley is an awesome tutor! My daughter was an average student in her Latin class, and with Bradley's short term tutelage, it directly contributed to a better understanding and increased her knowledge to achieve a higher grade in what was a very challenging for her.

Thorough, patient and encouraging!

Bradley really helped me advance in my Greek studies. He is very thorough and patient and takes the time to explain the full grammar rules and through that, guide you to the correct answer rather than just tell you. It is evident that he is passionate and knowledgeable. And thanks to him, I finally understand accents! Thanks Bradley!

Wise and Personable Tutor!

Bradley and I met, brushed up and reviewed some crucial and foundational frameworks for Greek cases and pronunciation, and also talked about my academic purpose for reading the Iliad in the original. Bradley has been wonderful in guiding me towards learning how to learn Greek. Many more lessons to come!
