Marygrove College - Detroit, MI (Business Administrat)
University of Phoenix (MBA)
Dear Potential Students and Parents,
In introduction, my name is Wanda H. I have multiple years of experience in the workforce in the areas of teaching, training and development and finance. I am a graduate of Cass Technical High School, Marygrove College and the University of Phoenix, from which I obtained Cum Laude degrees in Business Administration. I was an instructor for three years with the Detroit Public Schools (DPS) system. As an Emergency Substitute Teacher, I taught at the same school for this entire period, on a daily basis. This school (Courtis) was an elementary/middle school that had grade levels from preschool to the seventh grade. During one of these years I was teamed with another instructor with a fourth grade class. While my team-instructor was responsible for teaching the literary arts (writing, spelling, etc.), I was responsible for providing instruction in the areas of math, science and social studies. I loved working with the students so much that once I left DPS, I worked for awhile with a Sylvan Learning Center franchise until it went out of business.
I am also very much interested in public speaking-- so much so that I joined a Toastmasters' International club in Detroit. For the year 2015/2016 I have been elected to the position of Secretary. I have a lot of fun with this group and have found that my speaking, writing and research skills, which had gotten somewhat lax, have been greatly improved.
My approach to teaching and tutoring has always been to follow the guidelines set by the institution for which I was employed. Even so, there is always a little extra needed. When my fourth graders at Courtis were having a difficult time with multiplication (times tables), I decided to make a game of this learning experience with little prizes. My class passed the state-mandated requirements for that school year, In order to improve the relationship I had with my students I would spend time away from the classroom with them. On Saturday mornings I would make it a point to attend the boys and girls basketball games, sometimes both on the same day. This helped the students to know that Ms. H. cared for them as individuals and that I respected the aims and goals they set for themselves. Dear Potential Students and Parents,

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
As a Cum Laude graduate with a Master's in Business Administration, I have had every class necessary for a business degree. I also I have experience as a substitute teacher in the Detroit Public Schools system and have prior experience as a tutor with a Sylvan Learning Center franchise. I also have a multitude of experience in finance and the business world in general.
I had always heard of Toastmasters' International so when I got the chance to join a club last year I did so. This year I was elected the Power Talkers Secretary for the 2015/2016 fiscal year. I am currently working on attaining my Competent Communications and Competent Leadership badges which I should have done by the end of 2015. I do not yet know how far I will go with the organization, but I find it a lot of fun and being a member has improved my speaking, listening, writing and research skills.
