About Christian

I am a Chicago native and a graduate of Grinnell College where I studied history and sociology. Working in community service and youth centers has given me the opportunity to hold various enrichment classes and open hours for one-on-one tutoring and mentorship. For the past 3 years, I have spent time tutoring and mentoring middle school to college-aged youth in one-on-one and group environments. Through these opportunities, I have been able to gain a lot of experience mentoring students in organizational and executive skills; and college and job planning; as well as tutoring in math, writing, reading comprehension, and research. Although my degree is in history and sociology, I have worked for non-profit agencies since college in organizational and data management positions.

My goal is always to get students interested in learning. I accomplish this by making the topics relational and applicable to real-life. I love finding new ways to explain complex concepts and truly believes in individualizing my approach and connecting to my students. I am patient and I focus on making learning enjoyable by making our lessons an interactive process, which boosts retention of information. People tend to remember things they learn through doing or through actual discussion and that is what I deliver. Some of my many interests and hobbies include watching documentaries, taking dance classes, building websites, trying out new recipes, connecting to people, and keeping up with the latest technology and academic trends.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Career Development

For the past 2 years I have mentored high school and college aged youth in a media arts organization. I taught a 2-hour long class twice a week on career development that included topics like job searches; building your resume; writing a cover letter; and how to best present yourself in in-person and remote interviews. I've assisted over 25 students individually in one on one sessions and around 10-15 students attended at least one of my sessions each week.

College Counseling

Over the past two years I have held one-on-one sessions for students in a youth media arts organization, who requested assistance in their college search and application process. The students have ranged from those who wanted to stick close to home and go to community college, to those who wanted to go further away to a 4-year residential institution. I have walked them through the search process by helping them figure out exactly what they wanted out of a school, what they might want to study, and which ones they might get in to. I have helped them navigate the financial aid process including searches for outside scholarships and explaining the process to their parents. And I have guided them through the application process by brainstorming topics for their personal statement and reviewing and revising it after it's been written.

Over the two year period I have assisted over 10 students and all of them have gone to some form of community college or residential university.

Prealgebra

Pre-algebra is one of the levels of math where I have the most experience. I have tutored middle-school aged youth in this subject for the past 3 years. While I was working in a youth media arts organization, I saw how many of the youth didn't have the math skills they needed to really grasp some of the media arts concepts they were trying to learn. I initiated an after-school tutoring program to show them that math could be fun and useful. This was most effective with topics like percentages, proportions, and angles.

I think it's important to show youth the various applications of math and different ways to accomplish the same goals. If you answer the "why does this matter" question, you can motivate them to pick up the topics.

Study Skills

I tutor executive functioning for a non-exclusive tutoring company here in Chicago. This includes teaching students how to create their own personalized organizational system; how to manage their time; how to develop a note-taking system; how to plan ahead for homework and tests; and how to stay focused when studying.

For the past two years I have tutored in organizational and study skills in an after school program that I created for a lead youth media arts non-profit organization. This included all of the above functions as well as how to utilize applications to stay on task; monitor time usage habits; and present themselves in a way that sells.

Very Happy

We are very happy with Christian's work. She found the source of our daughter's math anxiety, and the key to her success in pre-algebra after only a few sessions. Thanks!
