About Stephanie

I have always wanted to be a teacher, but did not want the task of classroom management. I have found working individually and with groups of students to be very rewarding and fun. As someone who enjoys learning and school, I wish to instill this love for lifelong learning in others. Additionally, I recognize how difficult it is to obtain a job without a college degree, and I cannot imagine how difficult it would be to obtain one without a high school degree. I hope to help others reach their academic goals, whether it be to just pass the one tricky class, or become top in their class.

I have degrees in Sustainable Business and Biology from Aquinas College located in Grand Rapids, MI, and am currently studying for my Masters in Public Health. During my time at Aquinas I was an Insignis Honors Student and made the Dean’s List all semesters. I also studied abroad at EARTH University in Limon, Costa Rica. As an eighth grade student I was selected as one of the top 75 students in the county to attend the Kalamazoo Area Mathematics and Science Center (KAMSC), where I took classes in math, science, research, and technology half a day during my high school career. I earned a 5 on both the AP Statistics and AP Calculus exams, a 4 on the AP Language and Composition exam, and a 3 on the AP Environmental Science exam. Between my high school and college education, I am comfortable teaching math (elementary through calculus and statistics), science (Biology, Environmental Biology, Physical Science, Chemistry, Zoology, Genetics, Botany), and Spanish (certified at the Advanced I level Spanish by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages, December 2012).

I have quite a bit of formal and informal instructing experience. Most recently, I have been working as a math and reading interventionist for fifth grade students. Prior to that I served as a Denver Math Fellow, teaching math to groups of 2-4 middle school students in an effort to close the achievement gap. I was an adventure trip leader and instructed backcountry living skills to middle and high school participants before and during courses. I have worked individually and in groups with students from a variety of backgrounds and abilities, including tutoring low-income, first generation, and minority high school students through Upward Bound, working one-on-one with a high school student with Aspergers and Turret’s syndrome, and peer tutoring students at Aquinas College in Accounting, Environmental Biology, and Advanced Environmental Science. I also taught the math and science sections for the ACT Prep Class through Upward Bound, and have instructed and supervised laboratory and field research skills to urban high school students through the Third-90 Network. As part of my internship with the West Michigan Environmental Action Council (WMEAC) I educated community members on impacts of storm water runoff and provided instruction for the construction of rain barrels. I have thoroughly enjoyed all of these opportunities to work with others and hope to have the same opportunity with you.

I hold myself to high standards, and I expect the same of the students I work with. I try to push my students to do their best in each assignment, be prepared and ask questions. I expect my students to take responsibility for their learning and do their part to master the material. Likewise, please provide feedback on how I can better serve you and help you reach your goals.

I try to be flexible with time and scheduling. I will do my best to meet you when it is most convenient for you. If you do need to cancel a lesson, please try to let me know at least 12 hours in advance so I can plan accordingly.

I look forward to hearing from you and working together to reach your academic goals!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 2

I have spent the past 3 years teaching math intervention to elementary and middle school students. I have also tutored privately with Wyzant for 3 years, and have really enjoyed working with students of all ages to help them reach their academic goals.

I took college level Botany and earned an A-. I have also taken Plant Taxonomy, earning a B in the course. I am currently a manager of a greenhouse, hoop house, and garden, and know much not only academically about plants, but also experientially.

Microsoft Excel

Use excel regularly for classes/work.
Took a college course in excel; earned an A.

Physical Science

I have participated in several science fairs, have published research, and have taught the scientific method to various groups of students for many different topics. I also have a degree in Biology, which relies heavily on the scientific method. I am currently getting my masters in public health, which also uses the scientific method.

I have played piano for 15 years now, taking private lessons through elementary, middle, and high school, and piano class in college. I have had a variety of teachers, and experienced a range of teaching methods while studying piano. I enjoy playing classical, jazz, and contemporary pieces.

Study Skills

I believe I have effective studying skills, going all the way from the way I take notes to how I prepare the night before an exam. I have worked with several students to better organize themselves to aid in studying, and worked with them to find the methods that work the best for them. Strategies include frequently reviewing notes, making flashcards, organizing notes, mnemonic devices, and working on the hardest, most comprehensive problem to test procedures and skills.

As a Biology major, I was required to take a semester of zoology. I enjoyed the class and did very well, receiving an A-. The course included a lab, complete with several full dissections and covered defining characteristics of many class, orders, and phylums within the biology taxonomic kingdoms Animalia and Protista.

What a great tutor!

We found a true gem in Stephanie. She has tailored our student's lessons to her needs and has been very flexible in meeting our scheduling demands. She knows her subjects and I can tell she truly enjoys being able to help students with their weaker subjects while keeping their big picture in mind. Highly recommend anyone who has an opportunity to work with her. She also has adapted lessons to be
