About Theodore

Let's start with why I love tutoring. The most important reason is that my life experiences have taught me that almost nothing is beyond anyone's grasp, as long as they truly desire to learn it and have a teacher who believes in them. I enjoy being that teacher.

While I am new to this platform, I have been teaching and tutoring in some fashion for over 30 years, starting with being a Calculus tutor for undergraduates when I was in graduate school. I have been the math teacher at 2 charter high schools, covering everything up to and including Pre-calculus. I taught multiple subjects including Freshman through Senior level math at a parochial high school. Along the way, I was assigned to teach specific prep courses to prepare our students for Arizona's standardized high school assessments.

More extensively, I was Associate Faculty at a community college for 10 years, where I taught Business Math, Micro and Macro-economics, Supervisory and Management Techniques, Communications and English. I spent over 4 years working as a flight instructor and aviation ground instructor, both independently and on staff at Ohio State University. In addition to teaching, I have worked as an actuary, manager, small business owner, software developer, pilot, and builder, so I can and do bring real world experiences into my teaching.

So why do I tutor math and related subjects? First of all, I just plain love them. There is a certain elegance to a problem solved with accuracy and efficiency. For most people though math is simply useful, because it is a tool which empowers you to understand and use other subjects in ways which just aren't possible without it. My approach to teaching always reflects the need to see purpose and usefulness behind all of the techniques we learn.

I understand that different people learn in different ways, and topics that seem impossible can suddenly become easy when approached with some patience and creativity. I will bring both of those to our tutoring sessions.

I have a highly flexible schedule, and can make myself available at almost any time given a little advance notice. My basic fee is $40/hour for a one-on-one meeting within 10 miles of Dearborn Heights, MI, zip code 48127; group rates and longer travel times are handled on a situation by situation basis. At present, I only tutor in-person, but I am hoping to add the ability to work online soon as well.

I look forward to helping you succeed. Let's get started!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have taught Algebra and a variety of other math subjects at the High School level. I also have over 10 years experience with teaching Business Math and Economics at the college level. Algebra is at the core of of the analytical tools in all of these topics. Finally, I spent over 11 years in Banking and Insurance using Algebra, Calculus, and Statistics in real world application to perform the essential calculations which allow these industries to manage risk and achieve profitability.

Business

Taught a wide variety of business subjects as Associate Faculty in the Business Department at Mohave Community College, 2001 through 2013; subjects were Business Communications, Business Ethics, Business Math, Supervisory Techniques, Principles of Management, and Business English. I was also a Purchasing Manager at Procter & Gamble for 5 years, was a manager at Aetna Life & Casualty for 6 years, and I owned and operated my own vending business for 2 years. I have experience as a Consultant as well.

Microsoft Access

I have over 3 years' experience developing MS Access databases for banks. I started my own LLC to develop and market a database providing a dashboard approach to developing and implementing loan portfolio quality calculations for community banks. I also developed, implemented, and maintained multi-user (20+ users) Front-End/Back-End MS Access database system which was used by a major Wall Street commercial bank to operate their internal loan review function. The loan quality package I developed for community banks was used on an operational basis by 2 banks for about 2 years, and on a beta basis with 1 other. The accounting rules governing these calculations are undergoing change, and at present I have not decided to invest the time in re-coding my software to remain current. If necessary, I can email screen shots of various elements of these systems.
