About Joan

As a dedicated homeschooling mother, I am knowledgeable in and have success teaching a wide range of subjects. Since I have been teaching my own children on a one-on-one basis for the past fifteen years, I am thoroughly familiar with this type of instruction. I am most familiar with the foundations of elementary and middle school education - English, phonics, grammar, reading comprehension, spelling, vocabulary and math. Public speaking is also a skill I can teach. I have the enthusiasm and patience needed to help students grow and learn in their challenging academic areas.

My approach to tutoring is to first make the student feel comfortable. I spend time assessing the strengths and weaknesses of the student. We then determine where the difficulties of the subject lie and break down each concept into simple steps. We go over and reinforce understanding of concepts before moving on to the next step. For example, with math concepts I use the Saxon approach. Each fundamental concept is explained and practiced until it is mastered. Then the next idea is introduced and explained. This way the student builds on previous knowledge to gain understanding of new concepts. Manipulatives are used whenever applicable, so the student gets a "hands on" explanation of the concept. Other subjects are also broken into fundamentals. Once these key building blocks are learned, subjects become easier to master.

I have fifteen years of experience in working with children of all ages. I founded and coordinate a home schooling group and often teach classes to these students. I have worked with Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and a church youth group. I am eager and willing to work with your student and together we will achieve success!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have taught three of my sons English at the high school level. They all scored highest in English and Reading Comprehension on the ACT. Their composite scores were all 29 or above. I currently tutor English at the middle school level and have obtained over 400 hours of experience.

Cooking

My favorite subject is cooking. I can teach tricks to quick and delicious meals that satisfy. Baking is also my specialty - cookies, pies, breads, cakes. Learn how to make menu planning and grocery shopping hassle free.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have taught elementary grades for twelve years and am experienced in all subject areas.

Phonics

I have taught phonics at all grade levels.

Public Speaking

I have taught public speaking classes to high school students. I, myself, am an experienced public speaker. I frequently proclaim the Word at church services and train others to do the same. My college education includes a speech class.

SAT Writing

I am knowledgeable about the concepts tested on the new SAT and have excellent tutoring skills in this area. I have taught my sons English at the high school level and they both achieved scores of over 2100 (out of 2400 in the old scoring method) on the SAT. I have over 400 hours tutoring experience and am confident your student will see results and benefit from my expertise!

Patient, kind, effective tutor! — Joan was great with my 11 year old daughter. My daughter has extreme difficulties understanding math! She gets easily frustrated and gives up. Joan was very patient, and gave my daughter confidence and the ability to remain calm while trying to understand a new lesson. When she left, my daughter had a smile on her face and actually said,"It was even kind of fun!". I would recommend her to anyone ...
