Grand Valley State University (German and History)
I am a student at Grand Valley State University, and I am entering into my final year of studies for my undergrad. I have previously studied in the College of Education, but I have decided that I would rather work towards a doctorate. With that being said, I love working with all levels of students, and teaching at all levels has been a passion of mine. My main areas of focus have been in history and German language, but many of the skills acquired through both of these disciplines carry over to Literature, English, Proof-Reading, professional and creative writing, music and so much more.
My education over the past several years has allowed me to travel to Germany and India, allowing me to help work with students in deciding on future Study Abroad plans, and helping making learning about various areas and eras in history/geography/culture all the more fun and interactive. There is no task too small or too big for me, and the personal growth of any of my students is always the primary function of any tutoring position.
Some of my experience includes working at an Alternative Ed High School in Scottville, Michigan as a classroom assistant, a teacher assistant at a High School last semester in World History and German, and being a lecturer and educator through Renaissance Club, Civil War Club and Olde World Music Club at Grand Valley State University. I have taught sword fighting over the years, used to tutor trumpet, and have a strong background in pedagogy and music. If you require anything more from me, please ask. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been a musician all of my life. I used to teach trumpet throughout high school, and have studied a variety of instruments from the bodhran, tabor drum and other percussion instruments to the Hurdy Gurdy and various types of flutes. I am proficient in baroque style recorder as well as in methodologies in teaching various music techniques.
Currently, I am the president of Olde World Music Club at my university, and we perform music from the middle ages to WWI era. This has been a tremendous opportunity for me in being able to compose new parts to music, as well as furthering my skills in basic music theory. I may not be able to teach how to play all instruments, but I have a basic enough understanding of the fundamentals of music, to where I can help knowledgeable musicians prepare for performances and competitions much like a coach.
