I have recently finished tutoring middle school students in pre-algebra, algebra, and introductory probability for more than 100 student-hours. These sessions were done in a group setting, but allowed one-on-one tutoring. The positive feedback I received from their teachers was phenomenal.

Before retiring, I spent my last 15 years at General Motors providing daily guidance to young engineers (typically less than 5 years out of college), on the proper use of physics in developing solutions to quality and customer satisfaction issues. Earlier in my career, I was given a Career Aptitude Test with the results indicating teaching was my highest potential. This seemed right to me as I had always felt best when I was helping others understand how to solve problems using the skills they learned in college.

While a sophomore in college, I was given the opportunity to tutor candidates in the Buick Skilled Trades Apprenticeship program. This activity was providing math tutoring to high school students without college preparatory courses, but needed higher level math skills for this career path. Of those students, 95% went on to enter the program and successfully complete the training.

I graduated from high school in the top 90th percentile, while taking AP (advance preparatory) courses in Math and Science. I achieved an ACT score of 32, taking the test only once. While in high school I started and presided over the Chess Club and Chemistry Club. Kettering University gave me credit for both Calculus I and II from my high school studies. I graduated from Kettering University with a 3.95 out of 4.0 GPA and MSMM and BME degrees.

My tutoring approach has a heavy emphasis on applying math techniques to real world problems. I believe this helps the student better relate to the math concepts being taught. I provide multiple practice problems which helps to ingrain the techniques being taught. Where a student is struggling, I ask them to explain how they were taught in class which helps me identify areas needing my assistance. My emphasis is on providing positive feedback when concepts are mastered, but also ensuring the student understands everyone learns in different ways and at different speeds. I truly enjoy when a student overcomes their struggles with a math concept and realizes they have conquered them -- I love seeing their faces when this happens!

I am currently employed by a nationwide franchisee who specializes in teaching K-12 mathematics. I work with individual students in these grades for a minimum of eight hours every week.

Elementary Math

I instruct K-8 students at a local Mathnasium facility two days a week. I specialize in preparing middle school students for more advanced math they'll encounter in High School. I use Saxon Math tools. I strongly recommend long-term commitments to ensure success of the student. I support use of homework to reinforce topics learned.
Homeschool

Homeschool

I have personally completed completed four (4) Saxon Mathematics courses/books, including Saxon Math 8/7, Saxon Math 7/6, Saxon Algebra 1, and Saxon Algebra 2. I am currently progressing through Saxon Calculus. I have helped more than six homeschool students at the local Mathnasium in various levels of middle school and high school math subjects.

Homeschool

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

I tutored at a middle school (6th, 7th, 8th graders) for over 100 hours. I used algebra on a daily basis in applying physics concepts at my work as an engineer at GM. My strength is my ability to simplify concepts to my students. I have tremendous patience with my students which allows them to relax and focus.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

I tutored at a middle school (6th, 7th, 8th graders) for over 100 hours. I used algebra on a daily basis in applying physics concepts at my work as an engineer at GM. My strength is my ability to simplify concepts to my students. I have tremendous patience with my students which allows them to relax and focus. I used trig and log calculations daily in my work as a mechanical/structure engineer.
Geometry,

Geometry

As a mechanical engineer, I used geometry almost daily in applying physics concepts. I tutored high school and middle school students in geometry. I excelled in geometry in high school, doing geometry proofs my sophomore year. Geometry concepts do not change over the years!
Prealgebra,

Prealgebra

As an engineering graduate, I have taken more than three levels of algebra to qualify. I have tutored more than 20 different middle school students in pre-algebra topics for a total of more than 100 hours. I tutor students by providing multiple problems per topic so each topic is mastered with confidence. I currently instruct at a local Mathnasium, helping middle school and high school students with pre-algebra concepts.
Precalculus,

Precalculus

I had AP calculus as a Sr. in High School. I received college credit for Calculus 1, then took Calc 2 and Calc 3 in Engineering college.
SAT Math

SAT Math

I have tutored almost a dozen students in SAT math and ACT math. I have used the last 3 years' Princeton SAT handbooks for practicing test questions/problems. I provide extra test problems for each student based on the difficulties they have with the various types of problems.

Math

ACT Math,

ACT Math

I have spent over 40 hours with The Princeton Review "Cracking the ACT". When I took the ACT some time ago, I took it once only and received a composite score of 32. The strategies to score well are easy to learn. I believe in spending time taking mini practice tests to help the student get familiar with time pressure and learn where further work and assistance is needed.

I used Trigonometry as a mechanical engineer for over thirty years. I am currently re-teaching myself in all aspects of pre-calculus using a home school text. Also, I am currently instructing at local Mathnasium whete I assist High Schoolers in their math, including Trigonometry, Geometry, and Algebra.

Great tutor

Steve is working with two of my children as they both struggle with math. He has made it to where they are actually understanding the concepts and their grades have improved as a result.
