About Lisa

I have been a Teacher of the Deaf for 10 years and have worked in Houston, Texas and Green Bay, Wisconsin, as well as here in the State of Michigan. I have a Bachelor's degree in Deaf Education and a Master's Degree in Special Education. I, myself am Hard of Hearing and am fluent in Sign Exact English (SEE) and am familiar with American Sign Language (ASL). I take pride in helping children with learning difficulties and disabilities in learning how to become productive members of society. I have been an Itinerant Deaf Educator and worked in multiple districts. I have provided direct instruction to students with Deafness and/or Hearing Impairments in grades: Kindergarten to 12th Grade.

I hold strong skills in reading, writing, language, comprehension, note-taking, organization and study skills. I also am knowledgeable of transitional (i.e., post-secondary settings, employment, etc.) topics for individuals with hearing loss and/or disabilities.

Each lesson will be based upon your student's learning needs. As a Special Educator, I am well aware that no child learns the "same" way and will do whatever I can to accommodate your child's learning needs. I am a very visual learner; therefore, my lessons tend to be more hands-on activities to engage the learner into a more interactive learning experience.

My primary objective is to help you, the student to develop a strong knowledge-base and understanding of language. This will help you to be more confident in your strengths, as well as help you to acknowledge what needs to be done to get better in areas where you feel you struggle (i.e., reading, writing, comprehension, note-taking, etc.). I will do whatever I can to help you achieve successful learning outcomes. Your successes may not happen over night, but I am willing to go the extra mile to help you reach your academic and personal goals. My promise to you, the student and their families is that I will do whatever I can to help make the student more comfortable in your own skin and more knowledgeable of your disabilities.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

As a Teacher of the Deaf, I have State Certification to Teach K-12. I continually work with students in grades Kindergarten to 6th grades in developing their language skills, as well as self-advocacy skills. I mirror general education curriculum when creating lessons; therefore, I am teaching content from State Standards.

Hard Of Hearing

I have 9 years of teaching experience with Deaf Education as a Teacher for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH). I currently work in the state of Wisconsin and am certified to teach Deaf Education in the State of Wisconsin and Michigan. I am fluent in Sign Exact English (SEE) and am experienced with American Sign Language (ASL). I have taught ASL Classes in the past for the Aldine Independent School District (AISD). I achieved my Bachelor's Degree as an Intervention Specialist with a concentration in Deaf Education from Bowling Green State University (BGSU) in 2007.

Phonics

As a Teacher of the Deaf and Special Education Teacher, I continually teach my students how to further develop their language acquisition. I teach students with varying skill levels, grades and disabilities how to develop their phonetic skills; further assisting them in learning how to strengthen their reading skills.

Sign Language

I am hearing impaired myself and learned Sign Language growing up to compensate for my hearing loss. I also have 9 years of teaching experience with Deaf Education as a Teacher for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH). I currently work in the state of Wisconsin and am certified to teach Deaf Education in the State of Wisconsin and Michigan. I am fluent in Sign Exact English (SEE) and am experienced with American Sign Language (ASL). I utilize ASL regularly with my DHH students and have taught ASL Classes in the past for the Aldine Independent School District (AISD). I achieved my Bachelor's Degree as an Intervention Specialist with a concentration in Deaf Education from Bowling Green State University (BGSU) in 2007.

Special Needs

I have achieved a Master's Degree in Special Education from Walden University in 2011.

Study Skills

As a Teacher of the Deaf and Special Education Teacher, I teach my students how to develop study skills with differentiation. I accommodate each student's learning preferences and styles and identify differing study skills that would benefit the individual. I have experience teaching a variety of students with skill levels, grade levels and disabilities.

Knowledgeable and Excellent Teacher

My daughter has been learning ASL from Lisa for a few months now. She has made tremendous amount of progress and enjoys her sessions very much. Lisa is very patient and organized before and after class. Additionally, she has been most accommodating to our schedule change during summer. I would highly recommend her for all ages.
