My name is Mary and I have been teaching since 1996. My certifications include elementary - all subjects, MS/HS Biology and life sciences, and Visual Arts - all grades. My approach is creative, helping you to find connections with what you are learning, see how relevant each subject is to your life and future, and enjoy everything you study. My experience will aid you in finding creative and unique ways to express your learning while meeting assignment requirements.
My favorite subjects include visual arts, especially drawing, painting and sculpture. I gladly accept private lesson students in these areas. In addition, I have a passion for reading and creative writing, especially poetry and short stories. I can help you express your ideas clearly and understandably as you develop writing skills. Finally, I love the life sciences and studying about how plants and animals live and grow. My favorites include marine mammals and birds when I study life science.
For many years I taught in sixth grade classes and challenged my students to stretch their writing skills. During this time I had students write everything from how-to directions, to short stories and poetry. We always culminated our language program with a literary tea, an opportunity for students to share their favorite pieces of writing with guests during a formal tea/luncheon event. I am a published author and at this time I am working on a fantasy bioethics novel for middle grade readers.
My love of nature really shines in my science lessons. I have designed many hands-on lab activities for students over the years that engage students to explore the workings of nature, think about and evaluate what they observe and draw conclusions that answer scientific open-ended questions. Throughout the years I have had numerous students progress from disliking science to finding a great love for the sciences through studies in my classes.
Art is my first love and passion when it comes to learning and expression. I show my paintings professionally around the country and gladly provide private lessons. I MFA focused on drawing and oil painting and since then I have also illustrated two children's books. I encourage my students to express their ideas through a variety of media, always trying new approaches.
If creative learning sounds like an avenue you would like to try as a means to understand your classwork better, explore who you want to be in the future and express yourself more clearly, then I encourage you to give me a call. Let's see how we can work together to reach your goals! I will be available to begin tutoring after June 1, 2015. Thanks. My name is Mary and I have been teaching since 1996. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I earned a Master's in Fine Arts from the Academy of Art University. My thesis project involved twenty-one original oil paintings to illustrate a children's fantasy novel. I currently teach visual arts in all media with a full semester in beginning, intermediate and advanced levels of high school drawing classes. I also scale lessons to meet the skills and abilities of elementary students in drawing, also using a variety of media.
I am certified in elementary self-contained classroom teaching. I have over ten years' experience teaching all subjects in elementary classes. I have worked with cooperative learning and special needs learning styles within elementary classes and my students have always found success with my teaching methods and style.
My Master's in Fine Arts degree focused on drawing and figurative painting. I show oil paintings professionally around the country and sell my work privately. I presently teach visual arts for all grades, K - 12, and focus one semester at the high school level in beginning, intermediate and advanced painting using a variety of painting media. In addition, I teach private painting lessons from my home.
My teacher preparation program focused on early childhood education. This included methods in teaching phonics, reading, and beginning writing. In addition, I have successfully taken and implemented the use of the Spalding "Writing Road to Reading" program in my classes.
