I graduated with a Double Bachelor's in Science from Eastern Michigan University in America in April 2013, where I majored in Japanese Language and Culture (including two semesters of study abroad in Shiga Prefecture), and ‘English Language’, which was a combination of writing and linguistic studies. I was also vice president of the Japanese Student Association during my time there.

In May 2013, I moved to Mie Prefecture inn Japan and began work as an instructor for Merry England, a private conversation school located in Matsusaka-shi. Here, teachers worked as a team to constantly change and improve on teaching materials for all different levels and ages of students. At that time, I worked extensively with the team in the planning and revision of the kid’s (ages 2-10), young learners (JHS/SHS) and advanced curriculums, the latter of which also included transcription work. Much like the adage, “the customer is always right”, we worked hard to format each lesson to the students’ benefit and preference, including everything from role-play, writing exercises, games and also test prep, such as for EIKEN and TOEFL.

From 4/2014 to 4/2015, I was head teacher at Zoo Phonics Academy in Mie, primarily working in Tsu-shi, but also in the Ise-shi school as needed. Zoo-Phonics is a phonics and kinesthetic learning based early education program. Children learn to make the proper sounds by associating each sound with a specific hand gesture. While I primarily instructed the freshman class of 2-3 year year olds, the age range of my afternoon students was until 12 years of age and of varying levels. Students were tested up to 4 times per year with weekly progress reports, primarily in order to gauge English and/or maturity level and ability to advance levels.

I enjoy working with kids and am not intimidated by them. I have been working in Sales at Toyota Tsusho America for over a year and have learned many things along the way, yet my hope is to return to Japan share knowledge of not only my native tongue, but also to hopefully spark a fire inside a child that they may work hard and not be afraid to seek adventure in their lives. To be honest, I was not the greatest student as a child but I did have great teachers along the way who really sparked my own fire and released a hunger for new places, people, experiences and knowledge.

It is my hope that every child is presented with that opportunity to expand their horizons as I have been so fortunate to do.
In addition to the above, I have a lot of experience in the arts. Drawing and painting, metal, wood and ceramic design and sculpture, and theatres arts. It may not seem to be of much relevance on a resume, but incorporating these activities and more into a lesson had an incredible effect on student success and satisfaction in my prior schools.

Concerning professional expectations, I hope to be the best teacher I possibly can be. I initially came to Japan to teach in 2013 to see if I would like working in education and, as it turns out, I loved it. I did return to America in 2015 to attempt building in other areas of my expertise but have since decided that I am best suited to further delve into a career in education. I currently possess a CELTA certification, my course being completed in October of 2017. Overall, I appreciate your consideration and taking the time to look into my profile and look forward to hearing from you in the near future.
