About Emily

There is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to a child’s education needs. That’s why I provide individualized lessons, assignments and homework help to strengthen all five areas of language arts: reading, writing, speaking, listening and visual literacy. I offer assistance through collaboration, proofreading, and editing of both high school assignments and college application essays. I am also a trained volunteer for 826 Michigan, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing writing workshops and tutoring designed to inspire students to write more confidently and successfully.

My artistic, articulate and organizational skills have allowed me to work as a corporate trainer and teach in classrooms as well as private and small group settings for various projects. Most recently, I spent the last four years creating and teaching engaging homeschool curriculum for grades 5-8 with an emphasis on classical learning. I am also a member of the National Tutoring Association.

In addition, I am a published writer with a passion for helping others find their creative voice as well as a deeper understanding of the written word. My writing has been printed in MomSense Magazine, and The Livingston Parent Journal. It has also been syndicated on BlogHer, and featured on Novel Publicity, Blissfully Domestic, Parent Society, Detroit News MichMoms Blog and Vox Poetica. I have also contributed to Chicken Soup for the Mothers of Preschooler’s Soul.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I have a BA in English with support work in Business Presentation. I have taught both writing and poetry workshops for grades 3-8 both in and out of a public school classroom, as well as home schooled my own child for grades 5-8. In addition to teaching, I have experience as a private tutor focusing on writing skills as well as college application essays.

Homeschool

I home schooled my daughter in all subjects for grades 5 - 8. I used a classical style of learning approach as well as gifted and talented level resources. My daughter also had the benefit of participating in cooperative learning environments and is now attending a preparatory high school. In addition to home school, my English degree and background as a professional freelance musician allowed me opportunities to teach part-time in and out of the classroom at the middle school level for several years.

Oboe

I received the Marjorie Zachary Powell Music Scholarship in 1991 for Oboe Performance at the University of Texas at San Antonio. Although I ended up finishing my college experience with a degree in English, I continued to play the oboe professionally and semi-professionally for many years. I have had the honor and pleasure to play for numerous organizations including the Ypsilanti Community Orchestra, Dexter Community Orchestra, Dearborn Symphony Orchestra and the Ann Arbor Concert Band, as well as taught for the Brighton Area Schools and Milford School District as an instrumental specialist for middle school oboe performance.

Reading

I am well versed in the writing and teaching of Nancie Atwell's book In the Middle, New Understandings About Writing, Reading, and Learning as well as her book The Reading Zone. I also follow much of the reading philosophies of Pinnell & Fountas.

Writing

I am a professional freelance writer. Some of my writing has been printed in magazines such as MomSense Magazine by Christianity Today and the Livingston Parent Journal. I also have a personal narrative included in the book Chicken Soup for the Mothers of Preschooler’s Soul. In addition to print publications, I have contributed to multiple online magazines and websites, including being syndicated on BlogHer.
