About Lisa

I've been a high-school English teacher for more than two decades--and I love being with the kids I teach more every year. You might be surprised to find out, though, that I didn't really like high school, myself. I was never that kid in the front row, with my hand up, answering all of the questions and reminding the teacher to give us homework. If you're that kid who sits on the side and is shy about talking, or who sits in back and wishes there was a way to sleep...I get it. It wasn't until college that I finally understood what learning was all about--when I finally had the freedom to choose, to begin to fulfill my own curiosity. And honestly? I went a little nuts. Two undergraduate majors--a B.A. in English and one in anthropology--and three minors. Then on to a new college, and a post-BA teaching certificate. Then three more colleges, exploring graduate majors, finally culminating in an M.A. in the humanities.

To me, what's amazing about teaching isn't being in a high school. It's being flexible and seeing kids as individuals, about letting their own curiosity catch fire. Because I want to be a part of their discovery of a genuine love of learning. And tutoring, in that way, can be even more amazing. Because it's just you and one student, and when you as a tutor are doing things right, and that light bulb goes on and something just--shifts--for that student, and something falls into place for the first time...it's magic.

With the exception of Brit Lit, I've taught just about every high-school English class you can think of--all grades and all ability levels, from remedial ninth grade to AP Literature--and I understand exactly how to tailor reading and writing learning experiences for individuals. Not only has in-class and after-school tutoring been a big part of my job for the past twenty-some-odd years, but I've also worked with college-level and middle-school-level students in the evenings and on weekends at various points in my career. I have many years of experience tutoring for the ACT and SAT--and I have just finished my first round of tutoring for the brand new SAT.

I've also been recognized as a leader in the field of education, year after year--I've spoken at state and national conferences, led teacher development, developed departmental curricula, and been recognized several times for my work with special education students. I am also a published author in the field of technology in education. You can be sure that I'm aware of the latest methods and ideas in education and that I'm not afraid of doing some research if you have a unique situation that we need to address together.

No matter what you think about the subjects of reading, writing, and test-prep--love 'em or hate 'em--and no matter whether you're thirteen or thirty-four, an advanced or a beginning student, I can assess your individual strengths and weaknesses and create a plan that meets your individual needs.

During the school year I am generally available from 4:00 to 8:00 pm, M-F, and 10:00 am to 5:00 pm Sat. My summer hours are noon to 7:00 pm M-F. My current rates are $55/hour for in-person tutoring and $30/hour for online tutoring.

I'm looking forward to meeting with you!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
