About Lauren

I love to support others on their educational journeys. I currently work as a School Counselor at a K-8 school in Southwest Detroit, where I focus on ESL and math tutoring, academic coaching, hosting study skills workshops, and social groups for students that struggle in the classroom. I received my M.A. in School Counseling from the University of San Diego in 2015, and I am also a K-12 Certified Spanish Teacher. In college, I edited classmates’ papers and projects, I served as an in-home care provider for a child with severe autism for several years, and I was the on-campus director of an adult ESL program, where I coached undergraduate Spanish students and to work with adults in the community.

Throughout graduate school, I was a research assistant in the Counseling Department, where I focused on creating counseling curriculum to fit a diverse range of students. I have also taught in the elementary classroom, first through fifth grades, in a bilingual setting, for several summers with a migrant education program. In this classroom, I focused on literacy and math interventions with at-risk students. I am professionally trained in a variety of academic interventions, I have lived abroad in both Mexico and the Dominican Republic, and I am very flexible when it comes to my teaching style. Living abroad has also given me an authentic cultural experience that I heavily integrate into my teaching.

My approach to tutoring will be completely centered on you and your personal goals. I want to get to know your strengths and weaknesses, and then shape our tutoring time together to meet your needs. I strongly believe in experiential learning, so if appropriate, I will suggest and/or connect you with authentic learning experiences (i.e., exploring Southwest Detroit if you are seeking to learn Spanish as an adult). I firmly believe that any person at any age has the capacity to learn something new, and love to participate in that process! (I learn a lot myself, too!) I love tutoring because of the opportunity to ask questions, as well as the ability to create a relationship with the content we are working on. I enjoy working with people of all ages and backgrounds, and love the opportunity to have one-on-one relationships that support others in their growth! Please feel free to contact me with any questions! I look forward to working with you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Study Skills

As a licensed School Counselor, I spend about 50% of my school year working with students to improve their study skills. We focus on personal organization, different test-taking strategies, note-taking strategies, and developing good study habits. I am very qualified to work with a tutoring student/group on study skills and find strategies that will fit their needs.
