I have been a licensed high school science teacher for 6 years but I've most recently become a stay-at-home daddy; so as fun as teaching my two-year old is, I miss teaching the older kids and I figured tutoring would allow me to do that again. I've taught in the public school systems of Guam, Oregon, and Indiana, and before that I was a marine science instructor in Florida, a Dive Master in Mexico and a public educator at the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago. I also have coached many baseball teams and have made claymation films that have appeared at film festivals.
Believe it or not, when I was in high school, I received terrible grades and always needed tutors; why? Because I hated school and I wasn't very good at it. So my story of becoming a teacher, my personal evolution of becoming one has afforded me a unique position to be able to successfully help and teach other students who are where I used to be. Nothing ever came quickly to me, and it took me much longer than most of the other students to understand things; but I eventually learned that as long as I studied something long enough, I'd eventually understand it. I also always needed things explained to me extremely clearly (which most teachers and professors have problems doing); so if a student is having problems with something, I'll attempt to explain it in several different ways; as long as I have their attention, they'll learn it. I am a very visual learner, so I teach with my own power-points and show many videos and animations to reemphasize concepts.
So, I've taught a wide array of science courses at the high school level; mainly general, advanced and honors classes of Biology and Chemistry, but I also taught an Environmental class for college credit and have occasionally taught general Earth Science and Physics classes. If you need any tips on the fundamentals of playing baseball or need help filming, directing or editing, I can also help you there.
I look forward to working with you!

We received/and are still receiving great tutoring services from Damon in Biology. Having been a biology teacher, he is knowledgeable in teaching skills and able to assess my son's skill level and bring him up-to-speed introducing new terms and concepts. As a teacher, he was able to answer my questions regarding necessary student skills for a biology student and we also appreciate the ability to Skype a lesson if necessary as we drive a long way to receive tutoring.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
